Unreal........................................ RANT!

Over 4 years ago I sold a crap JEEP to some dude. We filled out the Pink Slip on the hood of the car and that month the Registratoin was running out and this person basically assured me 'I'll take care of this (The Title Change) in the morning; I'm going to be registering it anyways.."

I was gullible apparently and have since learned this lesson (all I had to do was mail it in; but wait, what if it got lost in the mail? What if someone just MADE UP a name?).

04/2003

I get a letter from the CA State DMV saying I owed Registration Fees on the JEEP. I explained 'Huh? I sold this in last year!'. THe DMV said 'Cool. Fill out this form called a RELEASE OF LIABILITY.

I said 'Cool. But I can't remember the dudes name or info' and they promptly said 'It's cool, just put UNKNOWN'

So I did

06/2003

A $25.00 Parking Ticket shows up on this JEEP. I pay it as its $25.00 and goes away without incident...

--

Yesterday, we run our Credit for a coming Mortgage Loan and find out our Credit is IMMACULATE sans one minor issue that is preventing our Score from going into the 700 Club..

Anyone guess what it is ?

Apparently in

12/2004

The JEEP was towed and put into impound. Here is sat unclaimed racking up fees of over $1300.00 to where they finally sold it for $500.00 leaving us a balance being $800.00

The collectoin place is saying MR HUD you owe us $800.00

I said 'But I filled out a Release of Liability in JUNE 2003' and they say 'Well it is incomplete (THe UNknown part)' and I say 'The DMV says its cool. IN fact, they have a copy of it on Microfische and their records indicate it was received. They assured me (7 different agents) that I have done my part in Releasing Liability on this JEEP

-

The DMV also says they cant really help me and that it is now a Civil Matter and I should contact an attorney regarding this collection place. The retaining fee alone will probably be $600.00 and will take months to deal with (and time; and time is money) and we're buying a home in APRIL

This 700 Score is vital to rates and terms and the entire process of even getting a loan.

-

The collection place says 'Well, if you pay $795.00 today, we can completely remove it from your credit.'

HOW CONVENIENT

I had a similar situation, but was taken to court when the 'Buyer' actually wrecked the car I sold him. I was sued and taken to court because my name was still on the title/registration. I got out of it because the judge was cool.

That sucks for you, though. :furious3:

I have not had the opportunity yet, so....

"snakes on a plane, man!" (Is that appropriate usage?)

Man, that sucks. I had it happen to me on an old Toyota I sold to a "friend." They got about six parking tickets on my registration. It's so lame that you can't trust the majority of people out there. Lessons like this are a bitter pill.

I too, had something similar happen. My credit was dinged by an ex-girlfriend. The creditors did NOT want to remove it from my credit. However, I was diligent. I kept calling every day, keeping them on the phone for ages...Eventually, they caved.

Basically, the best advice I can give you is to find out WHICH department has the power to solve this problem for you....the creditors?...the DMV?...and be a burr in their ass and call them EVERY single day, several times a day. I am not kidding....We are talking your credit here...your upcoming chance to purchase a home....trust me, if you are in the right...being persistent might totally save the day.

You might not have time to make 3 calls a day and harass an agency. But, MAKE TIME. Believe me, it might be the only way.

Perhaps, you choose to drop the cash if you can and make it go away. If you can do that, then great. But, if its trickier than that, you are gonna have to be really persistent!

Yes. Yes, I'd say it is.

John get an attorney! Even if you pay the impound claim they can still [and often do] screw people. :violent5:

If you don't get your credit score above 720 you'll end up paying more in interest and fees.

These butt heads can't legally hold you hostage but your going to have to get someone who will play hardball right from the start. You don't need to prove who owned the Jeep, you just need to prove that you didn't own it.

If that doesn't work - kick e'm in the nuts :nads: I hate pond scum that tries to bend you over because they know how important your credit score is.

I vote we go straight to "kick 'em in the nuts," but please set up your camera and press "record" first.

ya lets get all the diego boyz together and get over there. then we'll head over to the fico score people and get on it.

What I hate is that they don't even bother to contact you, prior to it going on your credit report. Come on!!! They can contact your credit report (so they obviously have your info) but they don't call or send you a letter saying you "still have time to dispute this" before it hurts your credit. It's just another way the system tries to screw you.

Fight it, John. Just show them your 10k video and they'll back away. You look real tough in that muscle shirt.

Good luck!

Fight it, John.

Although that is the CORRECT thing to do, it will also be the most stressful, and probably the most costly one too, especially as the mortgage closing is something that is imminent, and the ONLY fast solution is to pay these crooks now.

It sucks, John, sorry to hear this.

I really don't get it.

This is the kind of thing I would never do to another person, yet the older I get the more I feel the numbness of these incidents.

WHAT THE **** IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John, I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope there is some justice in the world and that you have some equally great news coming your way.

It is def BS we have no control; and PK is correct:

THey have total access to our info but we cant even get a phone call ? I lived in the same place for 3.5 years and both Autos are registered with the DMV at my address...

The system sometimes; Insurance, Collections, DMV, City Departments.......

And we get to sit and suck on it

Sorry to hear that, John. I hate when bad things happen to good peeps.

At the risk of sounding like Debbie Downer,

I have a friend who is a dentist that lost two sons within an 18 month span recently. The first was 10 and died when a hole he was playing in collapsed and suffocated him. The second was 15 and died when the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a pickup at an intersection.

I know your credit stain is a pain in the ass, but just another reminder that it could always be worse.

My wifes mother (I don't give a ****, she ain't my mother in law) is being sued right now for a hit and run (wreck, not a pedestrian) that happened in a car she sold several years ago that was never reregistered. Everyone believes her about having sold it (to a complete stranger...bill of sale is long lost)...but the lawyer says "cool, but somebody's gotta pay and you're all we can find".

I can't stand my wifes mother some times (...ok...mostly) but that's ****ed up.
