Unknown recorder error and other issues in CS3

Found this thread but not much help. Opening the project manager every time I use the program isn't a fix, and this is an older version anyway.

I go to capture video and my capture camera plays fine, the image looks fine and smooth in the capture window but as soon as I begin recording, I get a few seconds or minutes in and the program freezes, I get the "unknown recorder error" and the program locks up.

I've been having some other issues when I start the program like the initial window that asks for a project is empty......meaning it shows my part of my desktop. Mid edit, it will also lock up and if I move anything it paints on the screen.......as in it leaves trails of whatever I'm moving. Usually a restart will fix this problem but the capture issue is the big one.

I'm capturing right now using windows movie maker and it's working fine.

I capture vid files to an external drive but I've always done this and it's only recently started this problem. Dual core system, 4gig ram, two internal and two external drives with plenty of space.

Any ideas?

EDIT: windows movie maker captured the same tape swimmingly. So it's not the connection.
