Unions, Guilds, And Budgets

Dov is awesome! I highly recommend his course and book to anyone interested in getting a lot of good, practical info on the business of making a film.

Hit the ON button..... say ACTION... wait 90 minutes... say CUT.

You just made your first feature film.

YOU KNOW WHAT? YOU'VE JUST GOTTEN A VERY SOLID AMOUNT, OF PRACTICAL INFORMATION, IN JUST 15 SECONDS!

Indeed.

(That fellow sure yells alot.)

I've been at it all day. I'm starting my 4 feature film... of TODAY!

Thanks Dov.

I just want to thank you for pointing this guy out.

Watching this guy is not only more entertaining than reading Como's posts, it's more entertaining than DVX Talk Radio.

Now I'll never get my 4th feature done. I'll spend the rest of my day watching Dov. What will he yell at me about next?

Wow. That guy scares the hell out of me. He reminds me of Gilbert Gottfried. He could be that guy's brother. Or maybe it is him?

Anyway... if I look in my bank account, low budget is about 150 bucks...

By the way, I like how he uses the Law and Order "dun dun" sound effect. Pure brilliance.

Oh, hey, he's got a 2 day film school! And he guarantees to give all the information to launch my filmmaking career... hot damn! And I get a DIPLOMA too?!?!? Where do I sign up???

I've got one of those diplomas. Still stuck in lala land of not making films though. Dov is great. I'd go again if he came back to Dallas. The DVD set is great also, and you can "rewind". Dov got his start working for Corman, then found out he was good at teaching it so that is what he's focused on. Gilbert Gottfried? Damn that's low. I hate that motherpoo pooer.

The DVD set actually interests me, just to see what he's got to say. He seems to know what he's talking about - I'll give you that.

LOL about Gilbert Gottfried. It's just when he yells, I see Gilbert in my head...

The dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park" were great. But did you see Roger Corman's feature "Carnosaurus", which he made for $400,000? If you didn't, rent it. The dinosaurs were quite good. Were they as good as Spielberg's $100 million ones? No. But was there a $99,600,000 difference? No way. "Jurassic Park" was marketed as having cost $100 million so you would say, "I gotta see what $100 million looks like."

When did he yell about Carnosaurus? Almost makes me want to go rent it for some reason... it must be brilliant if Dov raves about it...

lol! This comment did not go unnoticed.

Dov's book is a good resource, but I don't think his advice can be taken to heart, word-for-word, by the average workingman filmmaker (see also: dvxuser frequenter). He advocates throwing money to people left and right for "consulting". Most of this money can be saving by simply hiring crew who don't have a mercenary attitude and who don't mind helping a first-time filmmaker a bit beyond the usual job parameters. If one even has minimal knowledge of filmmaking, there's no reason why a person would spend half of his projected budget.

All the same, there are some nuggets of information sprinkled here and there in the book. Just wouldn't use it as a production bible.
