Anyone else think that a section of DVXuser devoted to unions would be a good thing? I know there's lots of younguns that hang out on here, and I'm sure some are like me, getting more and more experienced in the industry and wanting to get advice on industry unions.

Just a thought. If anyone is a Toronto/Canadian DOP or Camera Department union member, I NEED AVICE!

-Which unions to apply to?
-How and When to apply?
-Pros and Cons of Unions?
-What do you need to apply?

IATSE, NABET, CSC...
etc.

Anyone who can help me out, much appreciated.

Thanks

Aren't they set up like US unions? Where you can't join unless you work a union gig, and you can't work a union gig unless you're already union?

Unless your Uncle Tony can get you in, of course.

In Toronto it is IATSE 667, for both video and film. I was a member when I lived there. If you want to get in as a camera assistant, you need some set experieince, and to take the CSC course to get on the trainee list, then they help you get and various types of shoots. That is the only time they will help you get jobs, after you upgrade you are on your own, and can work your way up the ranks. With video it is a bit different. He can live a very fine life with out your card, but it will help in many situations. Certain place in ton will give you a hard time if you do not have it. TO get in they are looking for a certain body of work and expeince to be listed. Give them a call and they will tell you exactly what, I am sure things have changed in the past fiuve years. After that you start paying your quarterly dues, and they are happy. You also ge tsome good benifits out of the deal if you work a fair amount. Hope this helps/
