Uncompressed Powerbook Editing?

Matt Gottshalk

I'm considerung a Powerbook/FCpro/Aja LHA setup for uncompressed mobile editing.

Anyone have any experience with this and can tell me how reliable it works?

Thanks

Works fine with DV compression but I suspect it would have a tough time trying to play uncompressed in realtime. If you already have the setup give it a try.
For your needs do you have do use full uncompressed to do the edit?

I haven't bought anything yet, but got a quote from Promax on a setup with the Aja external box, and an 500GB FireWire 800 RAID Drive, as well as a LaCie 3 port FireWire800 Card for Laptop Mac/PC CardSlot.

With this setup it was mentioned that you can do 8-bit uncompressed editing, I just wanted to see if anyone else has done it yet before I plunk down the $$$$.

Thanks!

if you're only doing dv edits, you're already working with a compressed format to begin with, so you may be overkilling if it's only dv footage.

I will be working with DVcam, BSP, and maybe even [shudder] VHS.

BSP down rezzed to DV is unacceptable in this application.

Thanks!

You've got a lot of external things connected to the PowerBook with that setup so is there an advantage to using the PowerBook? (instead of a G5)
If ProMax says it can work you migth want to see if they can demo such a system or provide some type of return policy if it doesn't work for you.
Does the Aja box connect by firewire as well? Input/output of your firewire even with the additonal card means you're pumping a lot of data through firewire, especially with uncompressed realtime footage.

I can tell you this; I have a powerbook 1.5ghz with 2gb of ram and when it's the only application running, using only one firewire 800 external drive, once I'm working with more than 3 layers of video, it won't play back in real time, it's too much for a meager laptop processor. but I agree with the above, if it's just for mobile editing, does it have to be uncompressed, just turn the RT down a bit and it should be fine... but if you're lugging all those external devices, save yourself time, money and hassle and keep them all in the same box... a G5 tower.
