This is really interesting. I'd love to see a direct comparison between a terrible red color bleed in DV versus a red color bleed S-Video. Something that REALLY looks horrible on DV.
I think the issues you guys are having with dropped frames is cause of USB. It doesnt have the bandwidth to handle raw video. It is 480mbps in theory but that's theory. 400mbps firewire is still faster due to the protocol (w/o getting into details).
There are probably pcmcia or xpress card s-video capture boxes available - those should be able to handle it better. Also - anyone w/ a pci capture card care to try it? (not portable.. but good for a studio setup)
As far as codecs - you guys should look into the home theater pc community. I used to be into it a while back and remember using some program that would let you re-route which codecs went with which hardware and so forth .. sadly, i don't remember the name of it, but those guys know everything there is to know about capturing, de-interlacing, codecs, etc.
avsforum.com has a bunch of them as does hometheaterforum.com
sorry and geez 6 months have gone by, but i got distracted with work and never solved my dropped frames issue however fiddlermd brings up an excellent suggestion. now that i'm on christmas break i'll see what i can do. should have something for you by next year
Wow thanks to another post I just realized I never updated this info.
For the record I built a PC with a better/faster processor and am now using an analog capture card from Turtle Beach. No dropped frames...but geez that was 4 years ago everybody has moved to HD.
