unable to relink media files that are clearly there...

I'm sure it's some setting that I have badly configured, but I'm unable to relink media files that are right there.
Premiere Pro CC is refusing to relink my files on the basis that the media format is not supported, but these are simple mp4 files. What could I be doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

MP4 is just a container. The specific codec of the video might not be on Premiere supports (which would be surprising as it supports nearly everything). You say you are trying to relink the footage. Did the footage work for you before and now it does not, or did someone give you footage and project file and now you are trying to use it for the first time? If it's the latter then the person may have codecs installed on their machine that you do not and this enables them to work with the files. Can you open the MP4 files up outside of Premiere?
