Unable to edit .mxf from XDCam EX

Hi,

I'm trying to make some tests editing native footage from XDCam Ex in order to decide to buy it or not but I'm unable to "see" it. My computer is a 2x1,8Ghz 4Gb PPC G5 and I'm using final cut studio 2.

I'm trying edition with an .mxf file I downloaded from this web (I think it's a 1080p) recorderd with sony's XDCam EX and tried to import it to final cut with sony's free software XDCam transfer and freeware evaluation Flip4Mac (only allows to work with 30 seconds but enough to make some test).

Well, I can do nothing with XDCam Transfer, I import the .mxf file to fc but when I drag it to the timeline and render it an error message appears "General Error" "Out of memory". Of course I cannot see or hear anything.

With Flip4Mac when I drag it to the timeline I can see in the canvas a red screen with the tittle "Codec not found" but I can hear the sound of the footage. Of course another error appears:
"Codec not found. You may be using compression type without corresponding hardware card."
I have no hardware card like kona or aja, should I have one in order to edit this footage? I think it is no necessary...

Well, that's the problem, I tried changing all the frame rates and resolution settings and deleting the preferences (.plist) from filnal cut but it didn´t work. Did it happen to anybody before? Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong or what to do to solve the problem?
Do I need a faster computer??? (it's only 35Mbps so I don't think so...)

Millions thanks in advance and apologies for my bad english.

Not sure you can do that- the XDCAM transfer software requires the full contents of the SxS card in order to import into FCP, not just the MXF file. Where did this clip come from? Whoever made it, they need to make it into a full BPAV archive. Also make sure you have installed FCP 6.02 and the latest OS X updates.

I've worked with footage from the EX1 and I can say a- it looks *really* good, b- it plays with FCP perfectly, assuming you have access to the SxS cards or an image made from them to a hard drive.

Hi,

Thanks for the answer. I have fc 6.02 and all the software updated. I think I got the footage from here

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=119755 but I'm afraid it isn´t still available. Is just a .mxf file... it is the very first time I heard about BPAV ... What is that?

And if I need a BPAV file, where I can get it? In other words, I'm trying to test my computer with heavy 1080p files in order to see if its possible to work with them, where could I find some raw footage from the camera (Sony XDCam EX1) that my final cut could read? (I thought since it is a native format it would always read the footage just converting it with sony's software or flip4mac)

Thanks!

BPAV is how the files are stored on the SxS card it's the directory structure of the entire card with all of the audio, video, timecode and metadata. Without all of those files the XDCAM importer can't move the footage over into QuickTime.

If your system can work with HDV or DV or FCS 2 well it should have no problem with XDCAM EX. I've been able to get two RT streams just on my MacBook Pro no worries.

If you want clips you need to find someone with the full BPAV archives and get them to make you some QuickTime imports. Or go rent an EX1 for a day and play with it.
