Unable to copy a 212Gig file in XP Pro from one drive to another

I am trying to copy a large file (212Gig) off a 1T SATA/USB drive (Drive One), to a Seagate 1T SATA Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000333AS (Drive Two). Both drives are connected directly to a raid controller card (no raid setup). Using XP Pro

In Explorer, the copy appeared to happen normally and took about 1.5 hours. But at the end an error message appeared saying that it was unable to complete the copy successfully. However Explorer showed the copied file on Drive Two to be exactly the same size as the origional file on Drive One.

When I tried to import the copy into Premiere CS3 it gave the message "the importer reported a generic error". (the original file on Drive One will import ok.) Ran Chkdsk and it returned a message that it had found and replace a bad cluster in the file.

This is the second new Barracuda hard drive I have tried in a couple of days. A similar problem occurred with the first one, so I now dont think the problem lies in the drive. I havent tried to transfer a file of this size before.

There are two files I need to transfer off Drive One, both about the same size. They are dubs off an HDCam tape of a telecine of two 16mm, 25min, A and B rolls.

I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thanks

I get the same message when I attempt to transfer large files from one drive to another. I didn't know how to stop it from giving me errors, so what I did was copy the information over in smaller groups. instead of copying 200 gigs. I just copied about 50 gigs four times. If someone has the answer to this I would really want to know. It would save me some time.

Make sure your target disk is formated NTFS or HFS+ or else you will not be able to create files over 4GBs.

Some success; one file copied via USB, error free. Took about 5 hours. Am in process of attempting to copy the second.

The files are .mov 10bit HD uncompressed dubbed from an HDCam tape to a Macpro, and then to a 1T WD drive on a Windows PC, from which I am making the copies. My drives are all NTFS.

filthrich; what software do you use for splitting a large file into chunks ? I was thinking of doing the same thing. Or are you exporting out of Premiere ?

If you're still having issues with the correct formatting, you might want to try and plug up the drive via a different interface if you can. Sometimes the USB converters in these drives are cheap, and can't handle large file transfers without erroring out somewhere. If you bought your drive+case from a big name company like Lacie, or WD you could request an RMA and a replacement.

successful copy using TeraCopy

successful copy using TeraCopy

Tried again to transfer the second 220G file using USB and Explorer. Took about 5 hours. Again got the error screen at the end of the copy
"Windows delayed write failure.
Windows was unable to save all the data from the file F: LK.mov. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save the file elsewhere."
Tried again using TeraCopy via USB. Took about 8 hours but file copied successfully.

The USB to SATA/IDE adapters I am using are cheap cable like devices, not in a hard case. But I have been using them without a problem on IDE drives. This was the first time I had tried them with SATA.
In future I will continue using TeraCopy, and also look for software for splitting files into smaller chunks.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
