Umbrella / Softbox battle out

I've been playing around with a Translucent Photo Umbrella, shooting a fresnel through it & comparing it to an ARRI/ Chimera of equal wattage. I found a way to hook the umbrella to the light with a little help from gaffers tape, and it seems to work pretty good. Beside the obvious side spill ( I could always use a bunch of black wrap and shape the spill back some more) the umbrella seems to accomplish just about the same as the Chimera at a fraction of the price. The subject results seem very comparable.

Has anyone also tried this and what results have you had?

Re: Umbrella / Softbox battle out

shoot thru is more directional and less falloff than a softbox esp with the baffles. check your shadows.

So a little spun in there should take care of the fall off and directionality?

Re: Umbrella / Softbox battle out

the soft boxes we use have two baffles, and they're much greater distance from the lamp than on a reflector.  you could try it, but you're still prob gonna have a rather more directional source than a softbox. if you're looking to soften it more, shoot it thru an umbrella and THEN bounce it into a card. you'll loose a few stops but, you have a 10K HMI, right? ;D
