Ultrascope Mark I Gearhead

Being that this is the "Hardware" section, I figured I'd post something I found a few months ago, but was inoperable until some repairs were made. I don't own this, but an associate of mine lent it to me and we managed to disassemble and reassemble it, and now it works, near flawlessly.

It's an Ultrascope Mark I Gearhead, and I'll be using it with the HVX, P&S Teknik and some Panavision Ultra Primes in 2 weeks for a video film.

Hi:

Isn't that a bit like opening a can of beans with a nuclear warhead? Sure, get's it open but a bit of overkill?

Haha! Most likely. We are, however, using the Ultraspeeds... the ones in question are the 50mm, 75mm, 100mm and 200mm... and for smooth pans and tilts, this is far superior to any fluid head out there. I've got a set of Bogen sticks with a 3066 head... and this thing blows that out of the water.

I figure, with the extra weight of the P&S Teknik, Anton Bauer battery and mattebox system (aside from the lenses), the geared head will still dwarf the camera system, but it'll get some freaking amazing pans and tilts...

I don't think it's like opening a can of beans with a nuclear warhead at all. It may exceed the needed weight capacity, but it would be rare to find a "lightweight" gear head. And like Suppatime said, a gear head and a fluid head are two very different animals.

That does look SWEET.... I have the 3066 which serves me well.. but I could imagine how cool this would be with all that hanging off the front of the HVX. I think we'll also like to check out the footie... and some pics of your rig. I bet it'll look like a darn oil rig or something..

Congrats... I know a lot of film cam ops who swear by this set up. I've used one a little bit but without practice it was kind of weird to get used to this....
