I did a search on slow zooms and found some information, but wanted to refresh the subject and maybe get some more feedback. In a recent live music performance I wanted to do some real slow zooms. Of course I had to do them manually since the auto zoom was not slow enough. Also, I know that the focus assist would need to have time to stay up as well. Does anyone know of a device that you could attach that would work like a "follow focus" but work with the zoom ring instead? When I shot this performance I was stationary and did not have the option of moving around or use a crane. I had my "area" that I was able to set up my tripod and equipment in and could not move out of it. So I had to do some real slow zooms to get in on the individual performers and their instruments and make the shot more energetic. It worked fine and the performers were delighted, but I had to master barely turning the zoom ring and not have any jerks. It was tiring as well as tedious. It seems like a tool like a follow focus would be handy for the zoom ring as well since you would be geared down and could make small slow almost un-noticable zoom movements with a wheel. Has anyone else had this thought, or am I just too way out there and wishing for too much? Seems like it would be great for projects where actually moving the camera was not possible.
