Ultimate System

OK. Thanks in no small part to to all of the people who responded to my previous topic, FCP or Premiere, I'm pretty close to making the jump to FCP and Mac. The problem is knowing what's fair to spend and what I should be including in the system. I have a limit of $10,000 and would like to start in SD and move into the HUD arena when I can afford a new HUD camera as well. Now, can anybody let me know what I should be configuring, you know, the optimum Mac/FCP for $10,000. Or, put another way, when you get back from Resfest, can you give me an idea of what Mac power is. I already know what Bill Gates thinks it is. How would you build a system if someone gave you $10k?
Thanks again for all the help you've given this newbie to the forum.

Dual g5. 23"cinema display. final cut 5.(might as well get get the final cut studio and get all the programs.)

Damn...10K to spend? Don't sweat it!
Wait 2 weeks for the new , Dual Core Powermac G5 (trust me...it's coming soon, and the jump from single to dual is huge!!!).

Get the Final Cut Pro Studio Kit ...FCP, Motion2, Sound Track Pro etc etc....like 600-1200 depending on who you are, where you buy) or AVID EXPRESS PRO.

Then, get a good RAID (either firewire or SATA). IF YOUR DOING UNCOMPRESSED HD...REALLY LOOK AT FIBER CHANNEL OR SOEMTHING LIKE THAT...NO FIREWIRE RAIDS FOR UNCOMPRESSED SD OR HD.

For uncompressed SD and HD get Decklink HD capture card...like 600.00 bucks, it does both.

If your just doing DV25-50 SATA or fire wire will work fine. (unless long form...its my experience that capturing video over 1-2 hours will overload the firewire bus)

Well, my advice would be to spend about 4k on a 17 inch powerbook( that way you can edit on the run) and with the other 6k, well you can deposit that into my paypal account. Thanks.  I'll email you my info

Dual Core G5? Does that mean 4 way systems? If it does that would be huge! I have a Dual G5 2.7 right now and it rocks! A dual core system may convince me to abandon completely my other system for After Effects, a P4 3.0Ghz, and move over to a complete Apple setup. 4 processors... can it be?

I would guess a single processor dual core will be the first machine released. It will still outbench a Dual anyways....so what's the point. I think the Dual Duals are a fantasy, and won't be out for awhile if ever. But who knows.

Can someone please explain to me why, if shooting SD video (miniDV) one would want the decklink card and how it would be used? I keep seeing references to it, and have even tried googling it, but I just don't get it.

How about an explanation for those of us who took the short bus to school?

I use the decklink card for color correction and to see graphics uncompressed by DV. DV tears up on graphics. And since nothing I edit ever goes back to DV, I like monitor the video uncompressed.

Another bonus, it takes a good amount of overhead of the computer.

Those are my reasons.

yes....even if you shoot DV or DVCAM, going in uncompressed is best for serious graphic work and authoring to DVD.
