@Kholi - I would be interested in finding out how stable your system is at 3.6 Ghz? Are you air-cooled? I'm running the Q6600 stock and I'm thinking about going to 3 Ghz with it..
@Jeremy7 - Here are my thoughts... I would consider a 10k drive for your system drive and install nothing on it but your applications. A 75GB will work if you plan on using WinXP and Adobe Production suite, If you want to go with VISTA then I would consider the 150Gb drive. I have a fresh install of Vista 64 Ultimate and Adobe's CS3 Production Suite and I'm almost at 60 Gb...! approx $150
If your footage is important to you then please use RAID 5 from a "real" RAID card... Many mobos come with raid controllers built in, but I wouldn't trust them. A decent RAID card will set you back $300 to 500 depending on how many ports they have (4,6, 8+)... and yes, you get what you pay for.. so that $50 RAID card is crap!
You definitely don't want to skimp on the Power Supply (PS)! Most video cards these days need power to be happy and also depending on how many drives you will be running... Consider at least a 650+ Watt PS... Personally I would stay away from Cooler Master (I just went through a 2.5 mo RMA process with them... so I'm not big on them.) However I would check out the Seasonic's for their clean power and silent PSs. approx $180
Good RAM is important too, but you really have to figure out which Operating System, Processor, and mobo you will getting first before making any recommendations there.
I would also recommend the Lian-Li cases.. they are well built and IMHO worth the extra $50+ over other cases.. A lot of those other cases look cool, but most are made from plastic.. Visit your local Frys (if you have one) and check out the display cases.. A lot of them are falling apart. An no.. they don't carry Lian-Li cases, so you have to take my word. ;-) approx $150
If it helps here are the specs on my system running VISTA 64 (recently installed) and built for Adobe's editing suite.
As for backing up your footage.. If you have an old crappy system that you think is worthless.. Check out "FreeNAS" I just built a NAS using my old P4 2.66 Ghz with 1 GB of ram... I threw in my old IDE and SATA drives that I had laying around and now I have access to them whenever. You can set this up with a few 750 GB drive and have it do nightly backups for you. Of course to move this sort of data you will definitely needs a gigabit LAN. My Asus P4Pe from 4 years ago had it, so it worked out well. Anyway... that's just an after thought right now..
