So I was reading along in this months issue of VideoSystems, and I came across this little tip. It does not replace a follow focus, but in a pinch it seems like it would work. And the only cost is the tape, so it could be free if you get the tape from someone else.

"Do you ever have trouble hitting critical focus on a difficult move and don't have a second set of hands to pull focus?
Here's a neat trick. Take a piece of paper tape (don't use gaffer's tape because the gummy part will stick to your lens), mark the second focus point on the lens, set the paper tape taut between the focus ring on the lens and a non-moveable part of the camera, then twist the focusing ring backward to the starting focus mark. The tape will go limp. It will take a little practice figuring out which way to set the tape so there is slack when you go to the first focus mark. Then when action is called, without having to look at the lens, you turn the focusing ring until the tape is taut, and bingo — you're at critical focus for the second mark."
