How can I get great looking video / audio, but small file size?

(I'm using sony vegas to render) preferably .mov

Thanks,

ahhh...

You make it a small screen, with relatively high sample rate....

good settings, borrowed from a friend of mine who is on this site as projectsplat (at least I think he's on this site):

Details for 4:3 using Quicktime
Video -
Codec : H264
Frame Rate : Current
Keyframes : Every 25
Data Rate : Restrict to 1200Kb/s
Encoding : Best Quality (Multi-pass)
Size : 512x384
Audio -
Format : AAC
Channels : Stereo (LR)
Rate : 32Khz
AAC Encoder Settings - Target bit rate 96kbps

For 16:9
Video -
Codec : H264
Frame Rate : Current
Keyframes : Every 25
Data Rate : Restrict to 1200Kb/s
Encoding : Best Quality (Multi-pass)
Size : 512x288
Audio -
Format : AAC
Channels : Stereo (LR)
Rate : 32Khz
AAC Encoder Settings - Target bit rate 96kbps

Overall size will also depend on length of the video, of course...

What is your target size anyway?

I don't really have a target size.... I just want good quality with a decent file size.

Thanks for the help,

Look at Sorenson 3, H.264 and plain MPEG-4, experiment with frame sizes and data rates until you get close to the quality and data rate you feel is your sweet spot.

What you think is good quality I may think is very low or too high, what you think is a low data rate I may think is way too high... It's difficult to give advise with no hard and fast figures.

If you said I need to deliver full screen video to ADSL/Cable with a maximum connection speed of 1Mbs then we'd have something to work to....

I just want DVD quality video... for DVD

and then maybe some clips for the intenet

16:9

if the footage is going on a DVD, export as full quality AVI, and let the DVD burning software do that.
