Ugh... More capture settings problems...

Ok, I know this problem is brought up a lot, but I've tried everything I'm reading and with no results. I shot the footage in 24p, normal mode (not 24pa), and I've read on here that means I should be able to capture it into a normal 29.97 fps timeline without having to render it. But, for some reason, it still keeps telling me the footage is unrendered. I've tried it under numerous different settings and it still doesn't seem to work. Is there some tiny hidden setting somewhere that I'm missing...? If I go to "Easy setup" and just select the normal "DV- NTSC" format, it should work, right? ???

Please help!

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

What are your sequence settings...do they match your capture settings/preset?

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

Frame Rates are the same? Everything has to match absolutely perfectly...

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

Well, I don't know why you would shoot in 24P and try to capture and edit at 29

At least open up one of your clips in Cinema Tools to do an "analyze clip" to get all the details for us. Regardless of settings used, this will at least tell us about the clips in general, then you can adjust your "sequence" settings to match, or run the "conform" to get the clips to match up to the sequence settings.

Hope that makes sense. I'm kind of new to this stuff myself, but I've been in FCP about 4 hours a day lately and have come up with all kinds of workarounds for stuff.

Might not be the most efficient but it will work.

What happens when you simply double click a clip in FCP? It should still play fine regardless of what it is or how it was captured. I'm assuming that it only makes you render when dropping it in the timeline, which suggests your sequence settings need adjustment.

Kyle, are you thinking it's just another processor issue? That could be if it's a G3 or old single chip G4.

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

No, you can capture at 29.97 if you filmed at 24P - thats what 24p is meant for. With 24P you can edit and so everything in a 29.97 fps timeline...

However if you actually shot in 24PA than you need to remove the pulldown and edit in a 23.98 fps timeline....

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

Todd you are exactly right abou opening up the clip by double clicking it and playing it. If you can do thatfine but when you drop it in your timeline and it wants you to render than your sequence settings do not match your capture settings...Even one little thing will throw this off...

I am not sure if it is a processor issue...If I edit on FCP 3 on my iBook it makes me render all sorts of weird crap...but I don't edit on my iBook ever for obvious reasons....

What version of FCP is being used...???

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

My mac is a Dual 1 GHz G4 tower, and I'm using Final Cut Pro 4.1

You guys are right about how it will play fine in the viewer but needs rendering in the timeline. However, it tells me that the clip has a vidrate of 29.97, and that's what my sequence is set for ("DV NTSC 48 kHz" is at 29.97, right?).... So technically it should be working.... but it's not... >:( grr.....

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

If your sequence settings are absolutely identical to your capture settings than it should work...I don't see why its not...hmmm

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

As Kyle said, the settings need to be identical. There are other factors besides frame rate, but it does sound as if though you are just using the standard presets.

I would go under
Final Cut Pro/ Audio Video Settings/

and check all settings to be %100 percent sure. You may have inadvertantly changed a setting somewhere. Don't just look at the preset, you'll notice that they aren't all "locked" and that could very well be your problem. Look at every individual setting.

Look at your capture settings first, then verify every one with your sequence settings.

We can go from there once you verify that. The fact that it plays fine in the viewer makes me about 99% sure that there is a sequence setting that is off.

OH, I just thought of something else... it's not a bug persay, but it caused me a bunch of stress and took a day to figure out. If you were to open a project with 24P settings, ie capture and sequence... do some work and save it. Then close it and start a new project, even if you apply new settings to the sequence (ie change the setting back to NTSC preset), you literally have to go file/new/sequence (which would create "sequence2") and delete the first sequence that was there ("sequence1"). As for some reason FCP will not update that first sequence when you change the preset.

So basically, change presets, then create a new sequence. I'll bet $10 that's your problem.

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

Creating new sequences is as new as FCP 1.0 .As useful as clearing preferences...

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

The codecs on the capture and the sequence need to match...? They are definately the same?

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

Yeah you could try to create a new sequence...that was a great idea taubkin!

-and what a good idea it was! Turns out that was the problem all along. I delted the old sequence, made a new one, and it worked just fine!

Now I can get on with the editing! ;D Thank you so much!!! :)

There ya go... you can send the $10 anytime!

:D

MORE PROBLEMS!!!

MORE PROBLEMS!!!

...... Oh... CRAP.

Ok, guys, creating a new sequence fixed it sure enough.... But now there's a new problem because of it.

You see, there's a couple of scenes that I already edited back in the incorrect format (I had to render each shot when I put them in the timeline). Now, when I try to copy and paste in footage from the old timelines into the new ones, there's this bizzare audio skip that happens. Once a certain audio clip goes on for a while (whether it's the accompanying audio to video footage or an imported .aiff) it suddenly skips a few seconds back and then keeps going. It appears to be happening at random through the timelines, but when it does happen, it always does so in the same spot, even if I delete what I pasted, restart the program (or even the computer) and try it again. Always the same spot. And yet it doesn't seem to follow any particular path throughout the timeline itself.

Again, this only happens when I try to copy a clip from the old sequences and paste it into a new one.

I know it was real stupid of me to edit in an incorrectly set timeline before, but if all possible, I'd like to avoid re-editing all of it (though it looks like that's what I'll be doing).

Any suggestions?

Re: Ugh... More capture settings problems...

Hum? I'm testing over here, I can't figure out a way to mix formats on the same timeline.

pretty sure you will have to "re edit". That's what I would do. Just take some notes so you remember what you did and where you did it.

However, I think there might be a plugin somwhere though that would indeed allow you to mix different formats in the same timeline. Not %100 sure about that though. Could have been an entirely different NLE as well, possibly Vegas5.
