U.S Housing Crisis

Hi everybody,
I've been lurking around this forum for a while and finally have something to show for. I did a story on the U.S. housing crisis for a German newspaper (I'm a journalist) and decided to produce a video too. You can find it here: http://link.brightcove.com/services/...cpid1156002426
It was shot with a HV20, post-production in Sony Vegas. Audio: Sennheiser wireless. On and off-camera lights: Vidled.
Feedback very welcome.
Best,
Matthias

Wow. Well done. What a depressing story. I read about the subprime mess everyday but this really hits home.
I like your cutaways. I could have even gone for more...especially in the last guy's house.

I was going to suggest making a few of the edits quicker but I actually like your style of rolling a bit longer on the shots because it allows us to see and really feel these people's pain.

Congrats.

One question for you...what settings did you use for web streaming. Your pic looked great. I'm assuming you shot in 24pA with an HVX200.

Thanks. It was shot with a Canon HV20 (I hope I don't get expelled from this forum now ;-) interlaced and edited in Vegas. I rendered it to a fairly big WMV file (600 MB) and let brightcove do the flash compression before the upload.

Matthias : so far, this is the most interesting piece I've watched on the subprimes topic. Nicely shot, good exposure/introduction, informative and human all together. I only do not like much the couple of zooming you do.
I am curious to know how did you use the vidleds (especially those off the camera (hair light ?)). Has your piece been broadcast by some media in your country ?
Thx for sharing this work.

Thanks for the nice words.
I'm still fairly new to filmmaking, just picked up my cam in May and attended one workshop so far. So I have lots to learn (like: when zooms work and when they don't for example). Are there any rules of thumb?
I used one Vidled off camera on a stand to lighten up the faces. I tried to create what we call "short lit" in still photography, meaning to light the one part of the face and put the camera on the other to give it more shape but the Vidled was a little too weak. I didn't have time to light any interview with two lights even though I do have two. I need to do more experimenting and will probably add a Lowell Rifa to my kit but I also want it to be as small and as flexible as possible.
I wrote a story too that has been published in two newspapers in Germany and one in Switzerland but nobody has picked up the video for their website yet. I try to market it through my agency www.worldpicturenews.com now. Wait'n see, I guess. It was my first film though and I need something for my portfolio/reel anyway.
Thanks again.

Great effort, the only thing that does it some damage is the lower thirds, they are situated to high in some scenes and they appear to be rather thick blue bands on the screen. Slim down the lower thirds and repositioned them lower on the screen as well. Really nice audio and overall framing. Great job!!

this is a great subject. would be good to see a long form made out of this. you should continue with it, spice it up and explore making it full length. good job!
