Types of lights

are they also slightly cooler than a flood light would be with a gel infront of it?

i have thse ctb and cto gels that are supposed to be used for photography lighting, but ive been using them on my 1k lights, not melting per say, but the edges that are pinched to the barned doors are starting to warp.

Depends on how you are attaching them. I've not used floodlights with barn doors on them so I don't know if they throw out that much more heat or not.

But I can tell you that gels & diffussion rarely melt, warp or burn if you are attaching them to your barn doors correctly on Arris or Moles. Don't have any 2Ks in my arsenal, maybe someone can chime in out that.

you need to but LEE filter's HT (high temperature) gels
Rosco i think make some as well, you will get them from Stage/ theatre lighting supplies

Jonathan,
Rent the HMI's when you need them. They are super pricey, usually quite heavy. The alzo lights have been reviewed and there are some threads in here on them. The next time you are in the the west end of Montreal go to 2135 Oxford avenue in NDG and visit the guys at Cinepool. They are a pro feature lighting house with tons of gear. Pick up their "Free Catalogue" it lists all their stuff and will serve you well as a guide book of wht is out there and what it costs to rent it. When you see daily rentals of $200+ on an item it will give you a fair idea of what it costs. They are also a good place to buy replacement globes(bulbs) for your lights as well as gels and black wrap etc. They are very friendly and will usually take time to chat withyou unless they are loading out for a feature film.

HMI's are awesome and there really is no reason to own them when you can rent for so cheap. That, depending on where you live of course.

Tim.

What is your definition of "so cheap"? I live in the Portland, OR area and here a 1.2k HMI goes for like $200-$300 a day! so if I want 2 of those for a whole weekend, sheesh, that's like a grand, definitely not cheap.

That and here's the deal killer, rental companies demand insurance with them as the benefactor. I've never done a shoot with insurance and won't until I get good enough to warrent outside investment.

shooting without insurance is very dangerous - be careful - if something happens then you will be done before you can get outside investments - There is a reason all rental houses and localities require insurance

Gels in front of a 2K will melt eventually but it takes a while (1 hour at least). The fresnels i was reffering to are warmer than a HMI as they are tungsten balanced. An HMI (daylight balanced) is great outdoors because you don't have to stick a gel on it (thereby reducing the light output). However, sticking a CTB gel on a tungsten unit (which is already not as bright) to use and match outdoors is week and you will get very little useful light (unless you got some 2Ks).

Soft - as in softer shadows (a china ball has diffusion, the fresnel lens lens some diffusion, an open face has no diffusion and produces hard shadows)
