Types of light?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone out there would want to give a in depth description of all the different types of lights (tungsten, fresnell, hmi,...etc) and what quality of light each type gives off and what you would typically use each type for. If there is a post already for this then could someone refer me to that thread

Thanks,

David

HMIs and Kinoflows

Short answer about HMIs

The produce a daylight color light and are very efficient. This means that you get a lot more light for the same amount of electricity drawn or said another way, for a given wattage, HMI is much brighter than the tungsten.

A potential advantage is the color temperature of the light is similar to natural daylight, so the can be used as fill (without blue gels) when shooting outdoors or in a window lit room without the outdoors looking blue. If you mix HMIs with tungsen lights (such as a lowell omni), the tungten light will look yellow orange.

We rent them occasionally when lighting a large area, such as a factory (because we can get the a very bright source without blowing a 20 amp fuse, or if we need a mixed indoor/outdoor scene like an interview in fount of a window.

A drawback is that HMIs need a Ballast to power the light, so you will likely be lugging a 25 pound metal box along on your shoot. The are also expensive.

Have you considered the Kinoflow Diva. It is also expensive but it is a flouresent soft light that has a self contained ballast and doesn't heat up the room. I believe you can get either daylight or indoor color tubes as well.
