Type of blank DVD's to use

Well the time has come (tax refund has arrived) and I'm going to purchase a G5. Looks like the 2Gig G5 for me with 2 gig's of ram. My question is when you wish to transfer your project to DVD what blank DVD's are you guys buying? -R, +R?
Also, am I hurting myself going with the 2gig G5 instead of the 2.3 or higher? Don't guess it matters anyway since price is the limiter.

No you should have no prob with the 2gig it is an awsome comp. I uses DVD-R's my self. they have alot less probs with playing in some dvd players. I just havn't had good luck with +R only one of the 4 dvd players I own around the house can read them so I just stay away

I have the 2 gig that I bought in November. I love it. I have 1.5 gig ram, soon to be increased, and the top of the line graphics card. I also bought the 23" display, and have a 15" Powerbook. I am finally in Mac heaven, after many years of having to settle for the lower Macs. I also use -R printable discs, that I print on the Epson R200. They look great, and play on almost every player I've tried. Good luck and enjoy it...

TDK DVD-R's RULE!! FUJI's are good too. Don't cheap out when buying your DVD's......you'll definately get what you pay for.

You can get the TDK's or FUJI's at Best Buy for 19.99 for a 50 pack.

I just wouldn't take a chance with the Bo-bo Brand / NoName DVD's if you take your work seriously.

the 2ghz sold now is different than the 2ghz sold a month ago.

One huge difference, 4 ram slots (in the new 2.0) vs 8 (in the old). Also the 2.3ghz, 2.7, and the older 2.0 and 2.5's have faster PCI cards for future expansion.

I picked up the dual 2.3 myself, specifically for the more ram slots and the better future expansion, since I won't be able to afford a new machine for a while now.

If you shop around you may be able to find discounts on the older 2.0 models from places if they haven't emptied their inventory. It has all the fast motherboard features you would want.

As for media, I go with Taiyo Yuden dvd-r, been burning them at 4x in older g5s no problem, did over 100 for one project, also will work with ANY dvd player I have put them in, including a ps2, an ancient sony which can't play most burned media, and a finicky pioneer dvd burner / recorder.

I sat down with a rep from a professional tapehouse. According to him the Taiyo Yuden are the best you can get. But they are also the most expensive in the 4.7gb's range. Pro disc are good. Don't neccesarily trust say Fuji or Sony discs etc. They buy their discs from other companies, and switch disc companies on a regular basis. so one year Fuji discs may be great then the next year have problems.

also of note... the newer mac's come with up to 16x burning speed. The slower the burn or write, the better the information gets imprinted onto the disc. so, hypothetically speaking, if you could get the burn down to 2x speed, chances of having a a better quality dvd produced is a lot higher than at 16x.

PPT, does water ruin the ink from your Epson, and have you tried anything (spray fixative, etc.) to protect it?

Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and bit the bullet and ordered the 2.3Ghz unit with 1 Gig of ram to start. My future expansion capabilities should be ok now. For those that have the 2.3Ghz, have you been satisfied with it?

Powerdog, inkjet usually doesn't deal well with water, but they really look great, i know alot of people use Epsons t o print on their media, and to be honest, I've been using discs since the mid 80s, and never had water be an issue with them.

look for Prodisc 8x dvd-r media. These disks rule and are very inexspensive. I have burned more then a hundred and have not had a problem.

Yes I agree, Prodisc is the way to go. I have been using them for the last 2 years and I've made several hundred DVD's, I have yet to have a problem with them. DVD-R has been great. I have some friends that use DVD+R but they seem to expierence a lot of play back problems. And I figure that it is better to use a DVD that has been made, or at least tested by the drive manufacture. (Prodisc is certified by panasonic which is the DVD drive in macs)

Joe-
Thanks for the link, I've been getting my disks from Americal (www.americal.com), and they offer good prices and have just about everything - but the link you gave is about $10 cheaper then Americal. I'll have to give them a try.

Yes water will ruin the ink on the DVD label. So I've just made the point of not taking the DVD into the shower or swiming with me :cheesy: .

As for the Epson, I've used it for a while and it does a great job a printing on the disk. But I hate it as a general printer. (It always gets paper jams!!!!!!) If it did not print onto the DVD's I would have played baseball with it some time ago. I just have not been able to find another printer that can do what it can for its price point. If any one has any recommendations I would appreciate it.

Where can I buy these Prodiscs do they sell them at anystore that sells DVDs or only at the Prodisc website?

Joe has the link to the best prices I've seen so far:
http://www.supermediastore.com/prodisc-8x-dvd-r-silver-inkjet-printable.html

Another place to get them is at http://www.americal.com (Although they are about $10 more per 100)

What I like about prodisc is that they are made for pioneer burners and have been tested and approved by pioneer. I have not had great luck finding Ink-jet printable DVD's at the local store that has the same compatibility as these DVD's. Since I switched (2 years ago) to using these disks I have not had a complaint from a customer saying that it will not play in their DVD player at home. (And that is what matters - the customers expierence.)

use -R.

+R=crap.

Also... I have a 2.5 G5. Ive had some issues playing back DVD's burned & compiled through x8 speed media. Posted it on the apple forums and there are some other people with the same issue. We cannot playback the discs on the Mac.

Went back to x4 speed for now and they work fine.

I prefer Mam-A/Mitsui or RiData.

Good point. - As far as burning speeds go, the slower you burn at, the higher the compatibility. (Generally speaking that is.)

I have a 1.8 dp, its friggin awesome. Fork over the money and get a 23" inch display, or the 30", you won't be sorry. It also has 4.5 gigs(PC3200) of ram and a 300 gig internal SATA RAID. Booting up off one of those is like heaven.

I use memorex and TDK. They're usually the cheapest recognizable brand, next to the store brand. Never used those.
