Hi everyone!
I had a couple of questions that I was hoping to get your esteemed advice on...
So, in 2005 I directed and shot a short fan film. It was done by a team of biology students like myself, meaning no DP, no good lighting and a camera that shot at 30fps. Among the constructive advice i received was that for my next attempt, I should try to shoot at 24p for a more "film" look, and bring aboard a DP with a bit of experience who could handle the framing and lighting, while I focused on the less technical aspects, i.e. working with the actors, etc.
I'm getting ready to shoot another fan film in March (or possibly October), and I'm trying to incorporate some of the advice I've been given, but:
1) 24p camera - far too expensive to purchase, and with rental fees and the number of days we'd need to shoot, it would probably cost as much as purchasing anyway. Now, ASSUMING that I'd have to buy a camera (i.e. assuming a DP that would bring aboard wouldn't have one), my options become fairly limited...
In the absence of a 24p camera (DVX100b and XL2 are the ones that I've looked at, with the longing and forelorn look of a puppy looks out of a petstore window), what recommendations would you have? Would you recommend shooting at 30fps (60i standard?) and then dropping it down to 24p using something like Magic Bullet, or is there something else you'd recommend?
(I'm still learning over here, so please excuse me if I sound naive, because, well, I really am.)
2) To find a DP, I was going to try New York Casting, and craigslist, as well as canvas some local filmmakers that I know, but are there any other suggestions? In general, would a DP of any experience level be willing to work with a less-experienced Director? And also, am I in any position to assume that a DP should or should not have his/her own camera?
:dankk2:
Sorry for the novice questions, but I just want to try and improve what I can produce, and do a better job than the last time.
