two layers and adding components

in the shot i want to do there is an office. I'm going to blue screen an actor into the shot (several times to make it seem like the room is full of him). how would i be able to put one of the characters behind a desk if it is part of the background layer. Would i roto the desk and make it its own layer? would each desk or object he was behind have to be its own layer?

is there an easier way

you will have to make bluescreen shots for all the furniture.

you can import hi-res stills of the furniture or office pieces into photoshop and set them against a green or blue screen (preferably green) then import the individual pieces into AE, make them layers, and mask them.
