Twixtor variable speed

Hey,

We’re making a video using twixtor, a program we have no experience with. The idea is simple: the band plays a song (that normally has a constant speed) with constant speed changes, from very slow to very fast. Afterwards, we use twixtor to match the images with the original song (and its constant speed). The desired result: strange speeding up and slowing down effects from background and motions, while the band is in sync with the song.

Now we encounter two main problems:

-when tweaking twixtor’s parameters, final cut doesn’t display the effects unless we render for about an hour, even with the slightest adjustments. In other words, we don’t have any preview at all (black screen), which makes precise keyframing almost impossible.

-we want to synchronise the music with the images, but we don’t know how to do it. The best way would be to use the audio track as a guideline. We would like to indicate musical accents in the timeline of the audiotrack, find the same accents in the images, and then synchronise the images with the audio. Is this possible? Would there be another way to do it?

We’re using FCP 6.0.4 and twixtor 4.5 pro on a 2 x 3 GHz. Quad-Core MacPro.
The Video is HDV 1080.50i

Anybody who can help us?

Hey there, you really should just apply the time changes you made to the audio track to twixtor... (ie. band plays fast from 000, then at a certain time the band plays slow...)
It can get tricky if the time changes are variable or unaccounted for - in that case just do it manually by eye. (I dont know why your FCP doesnt show a preview??? - I mean it takes a while but you should see it.)

Hope that helps :)

I think you are better off using twixtor in After Effects, as the Final Cut version is clunky and has the problems you mentioned. For simple single speed slo-mo it's fine, but for something as complicated as you're attempting work in a real effects program.

Oh, and in reading your post again, if you have a black screen, that means you didn't drag your clip into the image well. There is a little box at the top of the filter with the words self. Drag the original clip you are slowing down from the bin into this box and you will see the picture. If you don't, the plug in will still use the clip the filter is on, but you won't see anything until render. Also, before dragging the clip into box, make sure you've set your in and out points, otherwise it will start from the top of the clip. And if you're using HDV make sure to set input:fields to UPPER...I still think you should use After Effects, though.

I'd also get the hell out of the HDV codec as soon as you can - convert to ProRes , Animation or similar before trying any Twixtor retiming.

Otherwise you're working in snail-time.

He Guys, Thanks for the info! option P does give a preview, just as draging the file in the self box, this is a frame per frame preview which takes about 2 seconds to load, but it's better then nothing. I'm recapturing in Proress 422 HQ now, Hope this will go faster. I'm using the Twixtor version for AE in FCP, because AE doesn't show the plugin in the Filters section, does anybody know how I can make Twixtor 4.5 PRO for After Effects work within After Effects?
