Twilight Saga: New moon

You are correct on that -- I've talked to a few teenagers that I know, and they're ga-ga for it.

So, perhaps the notion that teenage girls aren't running to IMDB is a perfectly reasonable one! :)

But you know what's awesome about this? Look up the IMDB rating -- it's garnered 16,000 votes, and a 4.5 rating. That's horrible. Folks are going to see it, and they're hating it... but they're still going to see it.

It's like that line... what was that movie... Woody Allen maybe... "These french fries are awful." "Yes, and in such small portions too."

I totally agree, teen age girls and cougars for the most part don't go on imdb, 99.99% of them have no idea what it is, IMDB and rotten tomatoes tend to be 70ish percent industry people, many have worked hard on the features, they want them to succeed so they give them a high rating, they also tend to give the other competing movies that weekend (or general time frame) a low rating.

When I was a teenager one of my favorate movies was Lost Boys. I just watched it the other night comparing it to Twighlight, I like Lost Boys much better, but hey, I'm also a 39 year old male.

Looks like the 3rd Twighlight movie will put the franchise over $1 Billion box office, who knows how much $ for dvd / tv rights, FX just paid a shi* load of money today for rights to air it first on their network in the US, 177 countries are in negotiations to buy tv rights, I bet it'll be around another $700M+ to add to the $1B tally.

I think Summit is buying someone a Yacht for this one. :)

if teenage girls were important, the beatles would have never become such a kick ass band. they would have made songs that were only for teenage girls and then faded out, like twilight is going to. hype=hype, it's just not worth it for either girls or boys. it's better to learn what real good films are early on, instead of this cookie cutter BS, that way when kids learn the world is far from cookie cutter, they won't have so much angst. twilight is nothing but a hidden angst virus.

If teenage girls didn't create a historical frenzy to ascend the Beatles into a pop culture phenomenom, then the Beatles don't become what they are. It certainly fed their egos, and as most musician will admit....playing music is often just a tool to get girls! :)

I would say that the majority of hollywood films are cookie-cutter. That can be ok for many, since it is just a way to escape anyway. I would also say that some of the women/girls I know that are into the Twilight thing are VERY aware that the world is not cookie-cutter, and that is one of the reasons they get so carried away in the fantasy. It gives their nerves a break with a temporary distraction. Distractions can be very helpful. These same people I know also usually gravitate towards more critically acclaimed films that have some food for thought. In this case, they like both.

I know where you are coming from when you want people to like "good films", and I often plead for the same thing, but that is subjective too.

I think that's a little presumptuious.

Let's have a look...

Like most musicains they began playing because they had an inner desire to. Not to get laid.
Sure they had a few hits that the girls dug. Songs like "Let it Be", "Hey Jude", "The Long and Winding Road", "Here Comes the Sun". Cough.

It might feed the eogs of lead singers but from my experience it does not affect the side members.

Often in the beginning sure, when they don't know how to play. If you play for a living, getting a piece of ass takes back seat to paying the rent and getting fed.

I look at those old Beatles videos of them playing a stadium or something, and you can't even hear the music over the screams of the girls.

I would definitely say they were a pop band and it was more than a 'few hits' that the girls liked.

But I love their music :D.

All those songs you mention are from their last 2 albums. The teengirl frenzy happened near the beginning of their career, and were more like, "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand".

What does inner desire mean? Desire comes from the ego, and they were just kids. I bet if you asked the Beatles if one of the main reasons they started playing was to get girls, I would bet my life they would laugh and say yes, wholeheartedly. You could even dig up interviews where they say that exact thing. This is a universal theme, nothing wrong with it.

I think you are right about George and Ringo having less of an ego than John and Paul, but from what I have read they were all sacking girls. Everyone has an ego...even side members. :)

This thread is alot like a thread on my sailboat forum, it's titled 'what women want' (for the boat) all the guys think they know then you get one or two females that chime in and straighten everyone out. It's funny.

Well supposedly this is the base motivation for everything - supposedly why geniuses and criminals often accomplish their greatest achievements before 30 - the drive to succeed is linked to impressing a mate. Even if it was "music first, we're purists" supposedly that would be reduced to impressing a mate - a mate that would be attacted to someone who's music had integrity.

I'm sure if not excplicitly, on some level it was to get chicks. It may have been a whole lifestyle thing - I want to be a rock star. Make great music. Do interviews. Get chicks.

i'd like to know what the bases is for weird **** like beauty pageants for little girls. apparently in some cases it leads to complete idiocracy such as such as such as that one blonde from south carolina who kept saying such as. she was just the one that got caught on camera. i'm just saying this cookie cutter thing is a perpetuation of something slightly out of whack about human nature. my main problem is that films solely geared towards exploiting this are being so f-ing blantant about it. at least i am hating the game here. i could go on a state that nobody remembers the twilight actors of BS cookie cutter films of the 30's, 40's and 50's. this is because they were completely disposable, in a genre of films that are disposable. frances bean was like **** all that and they gave her shock therapy

You have a strange posting style, HVX. Might try watching Little Miss Sunshine, however, it is hilarious, and agrees with you about beauty pageants.

Chip, any chance of a link to the sailing thread? As a sailer trying to get a couple of girls onto a pretty rough J41, it'd be fun to read.

Finally saw that POS Twilight on cable, and as I expected it fulfilled every lame romance novel trope. Bella is the quintessential passive protagonist. She does absolutely nothing the entire move but stand around as events happen to her. At one point, she even becomes the MacGuffin of the film (the thing every one wants), while she herself does nothing. Bad writing. I suppose this resonates with young girls and women because they're often made to feel powerless -- by their expected roles in society, from being objectified by men, by their own hormonal urges, so they identify with the powerless Bella. Yet despite Bella's lack of exceptional traits, everyone in the story desires her, which is what I guess romance stories are, fantasies of desire. I think cumulatively these stories probably are damaging to young girls because it reinforces the idea that they should just be passive, and only if they were desired by the right man their life would improve. Twilight also reinforces that destructive concept of "I can change my boyfriend", never mind that he's a vampire who feasts on blood. Looking at other "chick flicks", interestingly the genre with often the most progressive and pro-active female protagonists are romantic comedies...or action films directed by James Cameron.

^ someone wrote a very interesting contrast between Twilight's Bella as a passive heroine who's basically a walking, talking macguffin, and Sookie from the True Blood series who is basically a far stronger character who drives the story as opposed to taking a seat and being driven...

True Blood was the first thing that came to my mind while watching Twilight. Basically the same story, just nowhere near as good for the reasons you mentioned, and for several others.
