Twilight Saga: New moon

Edit: Didn't see the yahoo thing, before posting this. Seriously? Doesn't that fall under the 'nutjob' section of people who are going to get influenced by this sort of thing? Maybe that's a strong term, but if a (probably teenage) girl breaks up with her boyfriend because he can't live up to fiction...what...the fiction shouldn't be published? I mean who does this?

True, it is only certain girls. Just found it interesting.

I'm guessing if these girls broke up with their BF's because they were so into the book, then maybe there were other factors as well. But I think it's because of the reasons I've mentioned. It's such a social norm to have this 'perfect guy', and since guys are nowhere near perfect...

But if I've heard of stories like this as well, and others have... then maybe there's something more to this... But again, we don't have the full story behind these break-ups...

Break-ups or not, girls really really get into this book. Especially younger girls. That's another reason why I think it's so influential.

EDIT: Actually in the yahoo answers link, someone makes a great comparison. Twilight and romance novels are to girls what porn is to guys. It satisfies a need, desire. And let's face it, porn influences a lot of guys of what they believe sex should be... especially those who are young and inexperienced...

New Moon SHREDS movie records! $258.8M wolrldwide 5 day total, $140.7M domestic opening weekend, all time 3rd biggest.

And doesn't every inch of print or moving media in the world project an image of (physically at least) perfect women so we'll buy beer or watch the show, or whatever? I mean, hey, I love it, I just don't want to start enforcing a double standard!

My god, Twilight gives the nation's female youth an unrealistic hopes for perfect guys...so we should what? What do you propose? And how do you square it with the totally unrealistic ideas about women young men get from almost all media?

It's fantasy!

Propose?

Just make sure that if you ever have a daughter to make sure she understands what a relationship is. Make sure boys understand what sex and the perfect woman is supposed to be. In fact just guide them through all media, make sure they know how to make sense of what's real and what's fiction.

That's all we really can do. Inform. After all, it's entertainment. I don't think we should ban or censor anyone, just let them enjoy it the way it should be enjoyed, with understanding.

Works for me.

Getting back to the filmaking part of this discussion, it's one of the biggest movies in the history of Cinema. Makes me think about a few things. We don't have to follow the same old plot lines, or reinvent yet another fantasy rules-set around the same old super-natural beings, but it certainly has been proved that if we start taking into account the female audience, there is money to be made. If that could be done in a creative way, some fresh territory...maybe interesting for all?

What I'll be analyzing here, is what about Twlight creates this huge fan-base that goes beyond the typical 'chick-flick' / date night / romantic comedy? Those stories also vary from standard rehashed fare to the occasionally funny or touching, and they seem to be focused on a female or couples audience. But this towers over them. Why? What can we learn?

Aw, C'mon. Look at all the middle aged men who talk about silly action films, superhero films, sexist, etc. They make it a hobby and take it VERY seriously. I think that judging the people who are watching this film is very hypocritical. Everyone who does should look back on their post count in the film discussion forum and look at all the comments they have made on some pretty juvenile films over the years.

As much as it pains me to say it, I agree with the comment in the previous post.

I will probably, begrudgingly watch this with my wife, but will not judge her for wanting to see it so badly.

Agreed Jim. I just saw it with my wife, who enjoyed the books (and she's not a dim-wit). I think for women, the Twilight books are fun romantic escapism on par with some of the silly comic books and graphic novels I enjoy from time to time. However, it's tough watching my wife's frustration and disappointment with the films.

Having not read the source material, I can't comment to the writing, etc. The movies do, however, SUCK in my opinion. No pun intended.

No different than a Star Wars line.

I know. The Star Wars guys and Twilight lines appear to contain the same people at cursory inspection :D.

(But look back up the thread, I'm kind of kidding with this.)

Well, I wonder if it's because all of the ads were on TV? I am aware of a lot of films, but I don't have TV. So if it's only or mainly advertised there, I won't see it coming.

Geez, the actual numbers are in and they are WAY higher than the $258M worldwide.

$274.9M worldwide, domestic ended up at $142.8M

Saw Twilight in preparation for seeing New Moon.

Although what it actually prepared us for, was deciding not to see New Moon.

LMAO. I feel the same way. But my daughter went to see it a 3:00 am. I can't think of ANY movie I'd go see at 3:00 am...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Probably for the first time in my life I actually kind of do envy people younger than I am...because I can remember being able to sit down and watch two hours of bland enervating uninspired who-cares foolishness, and be caught up in it and moved by it and honestly not understand what was wrong with my elders, that they couldn't appreciate how really great it was...

But you know what's awesome about this? Look up the IMDB rating -- it's garnered 16,000 votes, and a 4.5 rating. That's horrible. Folks are going to see it, and they're hating it... but they're still going to see it.

It's like that line... what was that movie... Woody Allen maybe... "These french fries are awful." "Yes, and in such small portions too."

barry this i posted that earlier on facebook today and this is what one guy said to that:

me: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1259571/ yikes this movie has only 4.5 on imdb... thats not good for it. just says something lot of people have seen it but not many love it.

him: Or - lots of people have seen it and love it but don't get on IMDB - teenage girls. It has an A- rating on some theater polling thingy.

me: its has 23 on rottentomatoes.com

him: Yup. Pretty much if you read the books, you give it a high rating. If not, you don't. Because it's impossible to give a damn about the characters unless you've read the books. I give it mixed grades - because of the character issue, it gets really slow. But there are a couple brilliant sequences in there, and I really like the overall story.

Im like : "this guy is almost 40; why is he reading this book?"

also in imdb defense: there are nothing but little girls running the discussion forum on new moon. so they aren't making the rating any better.
