ok
http://www.twelco.hu/lp44umen.pdf

i got this mixer for a chack up and used it for total of 2 weeks in different situations , mostly comersials and drama recordings and few days of not so ruff documentary . so theis reviu is stricly about my imresum without any scientifics test i did .
the microphones which where used in these days vary from my new chiniz friends ( the oktava killers which iam going to use next week on at least 2 days of comersial and sitdoun intervuies for education style film and maybe in some reshooting for one of the episods for tv serial , till now there was no compalains ever ,and people who i told what the gigs were recorded with just didnt belive me , thats they problem :-))

ok back to our subject
it is 4 channel mixer whic build as atank - and veight about 2.1 kg without internal batteries
mic line inputs
phantom48/12/t power
for phantom you need to open themain phantom suply , the t is going directly from the powering module
the phantom apears on line inputs when the mic switch is not on dinamic
so must be waer if you hook the mixer to unbalance line outs whithout protection , you can blow the outputs
the good thing it can be useful if yoou desided recording gun shotes so you have phantom on line ins .
when the phantom is engange on the channel it otomaticly reduce the level for 10 db - what is good with shot guns , more problematic with low output mics as mbho or mkh-50 , then you need to run the faders to the end for quit scens
or rise the overall output of the mixer . not glad about at all but for the work i did on these days i didnt have problem with not enouth gain didnt have my mics to fur from the subjects and when i have i had sanken which gave me quit good gain .
the secend and the 4th inputs have phase inverse what good for stereo inverts or phase problems with close mics diring mono mixing
the preamps are in the same leag as wendt ,
abit more worm, not better and not worse
i checked the headphone amp and found it quit good a bit less transparent then sd ( the headphone amp not the sound as the sound was very good directly to 744)

the mic attunuation is 10 db for dinamic and 3 db for powered mics ( reduce amp gain not realy atunute in front so you have less hiss)
10db for line level as well .

the headphone amp has enouth gain , the output is double so you can hook
2 pars of headphones and it doesnt have any problem drive them for good level ,
the matrix on headphone amp is also ok st/l/r/ms/mono(a+b) and r-ms (a-b)
every inpuyt has 3 position of low cut filter 100/160 and off
every output( and there are 4) is equiped with individual limmiter
so if you like it on left and right you need open 2 switches , the limitters are on outs not ins .
the first and second channel could be ingaged to work with stereo signal , mainly st microphone , the preamp stage and low cut filters and the out limiters stay individual
no ms input matrix , the ms is only aoears on headphones , so you record ms or stereo if you have matrix inside your mic .
meters , i got one with vu meters , they are quit fast reponce , my mixer was calibrated for odb to ovu not + 4 as the maximum output of this mixer is +18dbu only
the limiters where calibrated for +8 db ober 0 ref tone ( sit befor main output potensiometer so be carfull that it sit on its zero and not less or more so you dont calibrate the camera or recorder in the right way )
so o on the mixer , -18 dbfs , limiters on gave me maximum -2-4 dbfs ,
the meters do have limiter led which shoes when the gain reduction starts , so i worked this way going down abit when i sow the limiter led lids , since the limiters are high enouth i had no problem stuck them and get good dynamics for my recordings .
the potensiometers are very smood , much better filling then sound devices but its form sucks a bit they are in the same shape as the sd-302 , i prefer the wendt or sqn stile , betetr way to push with the fingers without grab them .

the all switches are hard to push , so it quit good acsedently not change the settings .

the meter has 2 position switch to show lr or 3 and 4 when you disconnect these from the main bus and send them to 3and 4 outs ( on xlrs or unbalance inside multy pin , then they are unbalance about 3 db lower then themains)
eacxh input has prefader listening , nice to check microphones uring recording if something bad happend to one of them .

3 and 4 - you can disconnect them from the main bus , so they can go directly to their outs they couldnt be mix even they post fader and has their oun left right , the 3 is alwais going to its out even it set to right , and sothe 4
the limiter are individual so you can establish them as you like with inside potensiometers , my where 8db over the reference tone , the reference tone apiars on 3 and 4 but the master dont change it as it on 1 and 2 (l /r).

the 3 and 4 outs works only when themixer in 4/4 position no any prefader out when it is 4/2 /
you can monitor the 3and 4 with stereo position on headphone matrix
or true pfl , no individual .
land r outs and 3 -4 do have mic level atunators so you can pull pairs of line or mic level .
the mixer has 2 returns ( 1 inside the 10 pin hirosa which carry paralel left right as wel ) and on mini jack ( this is the same point) , the secend return is inside the 7pin unbalance plug . so if you run 2 snakes you will need to make mini jack to 7 pin adaptor hook the secend return .
on the side of the mixer you have switch to choose betwen these 2 returns , you can heare both in the same time .
the mixer has mono unbalance mic out so you can feed ifb or send it true amp to aditional headphone disterbutor , it alavais cary all 4 channels
the mixer could be with bbc ppm as well or ebu vu scale , no aditional cost ., the meters alwais leas with 2 leds , the visobility is good in the night .

the batteries - the mixer works with 12 batteries it also can charge ni mh batteries trie the 4 pin socket , good for these who like rechargebles .
12 bateries are so you dont need convert internaly the power ( up convert ,exept the 48ph) and loose power on it , so actually you can run the batries ti their end and not throe 30 % capacity as it ghapends at the others .

the mixer could be power from 11-24 v external power so any sourse is good , car battery , tractor battery or arri 24 battery
the mixer can acsept external np-1 box which has direct to moxer connection and aditional 2 outs for external equip ( up to 1 amp on these outs)
cost aditional , i didnt get that as i dint need one .
back to preamps - i powered 2 schoepses without anyproblem , the mixer give total of 14 ma what exept schoeps good for 4 regular microphones ( 2-3 ma)
really dont see many use these for 4 cmc-3 or 4 and die :-)

overall i left with good impression about the sound - not stoshed but good , at least good as wendt , much better then 44 **** , better then the privius psc model ( not the curent that i never checked for hard life and high fidelity )
the abiliuty run xlrs to external inputs and not min ones are grate benefit , much solid solution , no need for spesial cables
also , the snake of all of the output is agood thing if you run to external recorder .
post fader for individuals is also quit good if you running 2 separate cameras
and like recording presise signal .

so let sum this -
pros
good battery life - about 20 hours with phantom powe r mic
can charge internal batteries whithout take them out
phase inverse
good quality preamps
prefader listening
more then acseptable headphone matrix
good level headphone amp
2 outs for headphones (paralel)
easy to adjustable limiters ( if you know how to doit)
4 limiters
good motion on faders
hard moving switches
4 individual channels
2 balanced main outs on xlrs and 10 pin
so it easy drive 2 or 3 cameras
2 outs for 3 and 4 on xlrs - no need for spasial cables
4 unbalance individual outs on xlr 7 connector
2 returns
mono mic return for ifb
external powering 11-24 v
very solid building quality .

cons
dont like the preamp attunution stage , even didnt have problem my be not enouth with low out microphones
the phantom power on line ins - have to be carful when you stock to external mixer .
the rotery swiches are some kind cheap on left rigt/m and headphone matrix
the pots are small (as i said i l ike more the wendt stile)
no prfader outs so you cant mix all 4 and drive out individual only mix the first 2 and separate 3 and 4 .
the meter abit small ( not really a problem but i like bigger as on sqn or wendt)
no individual tone on l/r -jumping tone to know if you hooked right or to signal that is st recording ( bbc style)
no -10 dbv outs directly to consumer equip ( the unbalance are about 6 db higher)
no individual secend return input socket
no return level adjust - for most who hook to headphone amp it is not aproblem for people like me who like line outs it is to match the mixer outs .

no dc output to power external equp with mixer directly - you need dc distro or the external box
non individual 3 and 4 listening in headphones
the battery chamber under the mixer - you need take the mixer from the bag to change the batteries , not problem if you leave spare cables from both sides .
no cascade in , thats really bad

weight - with batteries you are around 2,6 kg more with ni mh

so to the end - if we compare it to wendt - it ois more flexible mixer
it is very friendly to use and has good qulity sound , it is not 442 but it cost about 1000 less where i live exactly like wendt
the sucsees of this mixer is established where you live and with $ to euro exchange rate
it is more then wendt and less then SD
so for US/canada users it may be not the best choice as you can pick up sd for 500 more
for all the others it is one hell of the mixer for very good price .

the rgullar 4 to 2 version is a1450us and realy knock the wendt down .
the slide version ( slides not rotery pots -exactly the same as one i checjed is a 100us more .very uniq as no other firm make something like that .

to sum all that - it is good product - it could be better , it may serv you for long time , it was selling much better if it was 200us cheaper .

so as i promised you you got the reviue for free as i was paid well and now have another mixer :-)
best wishes all

if someone dont anderstand any of the issiues drop aline and ill try to make it more transparant

Thanks Oleg.

Definately has nice features. Not really an SD killer, especially in the US, but sounds like a decent offering. Any clue why they went with analog VU meters instead of a digital peak/VU ones? Also, those toggle switches on the side look really easy to bump out of position; did you find that to be an issue?

Cheers

every thing is going hard , so dont see any problem for acsidents LIKE on sound devices :-)

analog meters
why 6000 usd sqn has ones - tradition ?
in ayear from now you can ask Ty Ford after he will reviue it :-)
wait wabit - ihave another few " reviues in my pocket " , eventiolly we would fine th ultimative cheap gear for dv filmaker .

ohh another mixer , now i need to buy another bag ... another .....

you see why i hate to make revue , it cost me .....:-)
