TV Spec Script?

Traditionally, you would write a teleplay for a different show on a different network (IE write an episode of Law & Order to be submitted for CSI).

Through your lit agent of course, unsolicited is for ****.

Wait. Who?What?looking for a job? Why do I suddenly not understand the question?

Sorry. What I read was that spec scripts are not accepted for payment but that a good script, as an example of the writer's work, could lead to being hired. Hope this refines the question. Thanks for answring.

It's my understanding that a spec script is a demonstration that you can write for TV and it's good to have 1 or 2 in your portfolio.

I get it. Read first - asked questions later.

The articles are great. Hope you have been appropriately rewarded. Great info - easy to read. Thank you!

Most TV production companies will not accept spec scripts at all and will return it to you unopened.

So then, how do they recruit new talent and writers? Also, is this true for HBO, Showtime, etc? I just can't imagine why they wouldn't be at least curious to fresh ideas and concepts, especially considering the highly competitive nature of television.

you should have several spec scripts to show that you can match the voice and style of existing shows, and also a pilot script to show off your original voice and personality. the pilot is probably more important these days to get an agent, but there's no way you could write a decent pilot without writing a bunch of specs to learn the structure of how to write for television.
