TV Output Using Vegas

I worked mainly on Premiere before but I switched to Vegas when I got my DVX a while back. So far most of what I’ve done has been for web output and Vegas has been great so far. Now, however, I have to start outputting to TV. I’ve acquired a Sony field monitor and I’ve done a couple of projects, they’ve turned out ok but I’m not really pleased (color, filmlook/effects don't look as great on TV as on the web).

I wanted to ask your advice on outputting to TV using Vegas, is there any particular workflow/software/equipment that will optimize my final output intended for TV? Thank you.

Additional info: I’m using Vegas 6 with the latest patch, my outputs are sometimes heavily CCd, and my monitor is calibrated. Thanks again.

TV's vary widely in color and image quality so what you see on one may not appear the same on another. Just go to Best Buy or Circuit City and observe their CRT displays and see the difference from one to another. Most standard CRT TV's accent the reds.

If you have a calibrated field monitor do your CC on it to make sure your colors and black level is broadcast standard. Also try to use at least an S video connection to the TV. The best output would be Component YUV if your TV has the connections. You would need a external converter to change the IEEE 1394 to component or AJA or DeckLink card in the computer all of which run between $700-$1000.

If you do the CC and black levels on the Sony and review the product via S video you can be reasonably sure that your output is accurate but as said it will look different on different displays.
