Turning 16:9 into 2:35.1 in FCP

Hi all, a simple question for some, but being fairly new to FCP 5 I thought I would ask first rather than spend an age trying to find ou on my own.

I have shot in 16:9, and I want to crop then output it in 2:35.1.

So what's the easiest way to go about it?

Thanks in advance for those with the answers!

Use the widescreen matte filter. From the top of my head:

Video filters>Matte>Widescreen

Then set it to 2.35:1. You can shift the picture up and down to re-frame as well.

Seriously. I just got there and it seems there's no way to save as a quicktime movie 2.35:1 H.264.

Obviously thisiswells, this question has come up a few times otherwise you wouldn't have been sarcy.;)

You have to specify the size of the image in pixels to do this. You can save it as a custom present in compressor, however.

Right. What is the resultant image size after cropping from a 4:3 timeline? And, what is the resultant image size after cropping from a 16:9 timeline? What exactly does the user specify? That's the part I don't know...

Just had this answer from Tom Wolsky over at 2pop.

Don't use the widescreen matte filter. After you've edited the program, make a custom sequence that is 2.35:1. Put your HDV sequence into that and use the 2.35 sequence to crop the HDV sequence.

Compressor will create 2.35:1. In the H.264 presets in Compressor, in the Geometry tab, the Constraint display aspect ratio popup has a 2.35:1 preset.

How are you outputting? Web and DVD? Remember that for DVD you will need to use black bars in order to achieve 2.35.

for dvd use the 2.35:1 matte
for web, export to compressor, choose codec you want, crop to between 57 and 61 on top and bottom, set constrain aspect ratio to 2.35:1 and you are done.
For an example of a file processed this way:
SHED
(Right Click / Save As)
