Turbo H264 and an encoding question

Following my big struggle with outputing my DVCPRO HD 1080p footage to a decent 1920x1080p multi pass high quality h264 file, which asked me for a 16 hours of rendering, crashed regularly and provided doubled frames, I decided to purchase this little USB hardware accelerator.

The turbo H264 is great for converting movies for Ipod, Iphone, PSP's, and DVD quality files. Anything over, like it advertises for Apple TV, just doesn't look good enough. The original Quicktime export setting for Apple TV looks way better than the Turbo H264 file- the apple quicktime Apple TV export is of 1280x720 resolution at an average bit rate of 5mbps. The Turbo H264 only does max resolution of 960x540 at 5mbps.

However, there are advantages to the Turbo H264: The main one is that it never fails. Its fast (one hour for a 41 minute 960x540 file) and doesn't crash. The Apple TV export option on Quicktime pro from a dvcpro HD file creates some dropped frames or frame doubling (This on a Powermac g5 dual 2.7- Further tests on a Macpro provided the same results.)

So my question is: does anyone know of a good h264 encoder for the mac that is reliable and can stand high variable bit rates and multi pass encoding, if possible at 1920x1080 resolution? This is for playing in a PS3 (which plays 1920x1080p high quality beautifully)
