Tuning Oscillation

I own the brevis

and upon my research on getting good focus I have been adviced to do tuning of the oscillation, the only problem is I have no idea what this is. If someone knows what this means can they please explain the steps i need to due to tune oscillation whatever that means.

It's all on the private forums on Cinevates site. Have you not been granted access yet?

Tuning oscillation has to do with the intensity of the vibrations. If you are trying to properly set focus, then follow the instruction's Douglas gave.

So turn off the motion on the and focus the camera? How do i do that?

With the Brevis attached (motor off), camera zoomed in on the GG, and lens attached, stop the SLR lens down and aim the camera at a bright source of light. Using the camera, focus on the grainy pattern of the GG. Once the grain is tack sharp, open your slr lens, turn on the brevis, and you are now calibrated and ready to go.

THANKS ARRIK

One last question. I was told you were supposed to do this without the slr lens attached. So you have to do it twice? The way i was doing it i was focusing on the ground glass with only the brevis attached.

So I I zoom in with both the brevis and the slr attached to the gg glass. So after getting it sharp I zoom out?

I do it with the lens attached, but you can do it without the lens. You dont need to redo it once you put the lens on. The idea is you are trying to get your camera in perfect focus of the diffuser. Once you put the lens on, take it off, change lens, etc.. .you shouldnt have to redo it provided you havent accidentally moved your focus marks.

Most people just remember the numbers I think. MF09 or 10 & z72-z75 seems to be most people's HVX settings.

No, you zoom in til you fill your camera's viewinder with the image from the adapter (the diffuser). Otherwise you'd get a picture in picture kinda deal.

Do you have your brevis yet? You should check out the stickies up top. This'll be more clear if you take a look at that. Head over to Cinevate's forum too.

That may work for zoom but for focus there are several different levels for each number.

For focusing I usually follow this:

yea, zoom in, with no lens on camera, point it at a simlarly lit are (white wall, or something similar), keep the iris on the HVX/DVX/A1/Z1 as open as possible, use ND filters if neccesary.

put a finger in front of the opening of the sgpro. this make sthe grain really stand out, and it makes it easy for you autofocus to find it.

Autofocus on the grain, after taping it down. put on the lens, set to infinity, auto focus again, then turn the GGmotor on, and while focusd on something with detail, autofocus again..... i knwo it takes three steps but it gives you PERFECT focus.

also, every 3rd take, autofocus with the lens focused on something contrasty and with detial, because the autofcus motors do waft after a while.
