Trying to understand something...

So, i've exported some HD wmv footage and while the bitrate is pretty low and my hard drive should defiintily be able to to read it fast enough, the video is still having trouble on my Pentium D PC. Is this because WMV has a very tight compression algorithm and my processor is having trouble decoding and playing it back? Is this perhaps contingent on my graphics card and not just my CPU? (I know VLC works a little better than windows media player but both are not smooth enough. I'm able to edit this footage fine using cineform.

What if I wanted to deliver my client a 1080P deliverable. What codec should I use in this case so that they can play it back smoothly?

I'm editing on Premiere Pro.

On a windows PC, you can hit CTRL+ESC to pull up the task manager while playing the video. If your CPU is at 100% on the older PC you are maxing out the CPU.

You can attempt to encode the file at a lower complexity with Windows Media video 9 (Not advanced). Put it on simple profile and you should be able to squeeze out more performance on an older PC.

h.264 does have a lower complexity profile, but I would start with WMV first since you have experience making them and you can ensure compatibility with other Windows PC's that might be playing these files.

h.264 will require a decoder installed on any PC not running windows 7.
