Trying to recreate the "star gate" scene from 2001

Hey everyone,
I'm possibly going to make a 2001 parody/homage soon and in it I would have a scene similar to the "star gate" scene (the part where Dave enters the Monolith and all the stars/colors/lights start flying by). My current plan is to create two very long images in Photoshop or one image and duplicate and reverse it, then place them into After Effects, have them scroll by in opposite directions, and change the proportions on them to create a kind of mock silt-scan effect. I have a pretty good idea on how to do everything in After Effects, but does anyone know how to pull off images similar to the ones in the movie in Photoshop? That's mainly what I'm having trouble with. Does anyone have any tricks or ideas? Also, does anyone have any better ideas on how to pull off this effect than the one I've come up with? I've already tried taking aerial footage of landscape, using the Colorama filter, and placing a luma key on it, but I didn't like the results.

Those scenes were made by Douglas Trumbull through a process called slit screen photography. A google search will give you more info, but here's a link to wikipedia's article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slit-scan_photography.

I don't know how that could be recreated digitally, but maybe somebody out there does. Good luck!

Particle Illusion SE from http://www.wondertouch.com/ is great for that kind of thing. $99, but a bargain if you need a lot of sci-fi type effects (vortexes, starfields, explosions etc)
