Trying to produce an effect I saw on youtube

Possibly but you have to remember that's a 3D animation and they were able to manipulate it as they saw fit.

Mmka1985 is right, there's no doubt that was done in 3D. To get what your looking for you'll have to model, animate, and render multiple scenes just as they did. The smart thing about that specific render (or look) is that there is no need to light anything therefore, it's not too render intensive. No shadows, a few textures (a simple blue texture for subjects / objects in the foreground and white for any background material) and a great use of creative transitions. What's impressive about that spot is the amount of detail implemented into the ad despite the lack of various textures. The movement is fluid too. Good spot.

Something to add:

I guess if you were simply interested in the aesthetic, you could attempt to recreate something similar to the iPod ads from just a few years ago. Film someone on a blue / greenscreen for example, get a good key, add some a bit of edge blur and even a light wrap, add a fill effect and throw them on a solid and work your way from there.

IMHO this look can get a bit redundant if there isn't any interesting detail or new ideas involved but if you plan it out well you might come up with something all your own during the preproduction stage. Before you shoot anything, I would think your concept over once or twice since its already been done (one too many times I think haha).

Good luck.

the only behind-the-scenes bits i've seen shows the film crew shooting live action sequences - but i haven't found anything that covers the in between (ie: how they got it from live action to that). the only thing i can think of is colour threshold but that doesnt look NEARLY the same.

cheers.
