trying to learn...

I got AE and I got a book called Creating Motion Graphics but its not sinking in...I am about to pop the tutorial dvd in and see if that helps my learning curve. I am not expecting to pick this up over night. Any other thoughts, is there anything basic I can do just to get my feet wet so to speak? I am going to see if any of the area community colleges or art institutes offer any classes.

just start working with the tutorials, is that the Trish and Chris Meyer book? that is pretty much THE book... do some work everyday and if you cant figure something out ask. the creative cow AE forum can be helpfull too.

Head over to the cow.
www.creativecow.net.
Follow some of the tutorials on the site for AE download the projects and pick them apart then experiment using what you have learnt and apply to different projects.
And if you need any help ask in the forum i'm often in there and would be happy to help out. But remember everyone has to start somewhere and once I was in your shoes too, so before you ask a question try and figure out the answer for yourself.
1) its more satisfying and
2) it seems to sink in better when you teach yourself (at leas it does for me but i suppose everyones different).

I also suggest Total Training and Creative Cow. There are 1000's of tutorials online for whatever you want. Google them and read them through. There are alot of video tutorials online also, and those seem to be best for learning a program because you can see it as it happens. I suggest you watch this video to start with AE: http://www.videocopilot.net/videotutorials/aftereffects101/index.html

That will get you started, if you dont already know how to use AE and basic operations.

Id'e offer a learning suggestion, but everyone here has already mentioned what needs be.

One thing I would stress is to learn specifically about blending modes, track mattes, and alpha channels. Much of what you will be doing effects wise entails them.
