Trying to get this cable to work

I have a VGA to component HD splitter (with a DVI to VGA adapter as well) that I can't get to work. It's going from a Mac laptop to an HDTV. I get no signal. The mac seems to recognize that something is plugged into it but alas, nothing shows on the TV.

suggestions?

I'm not really sure how such an adapter would actually work to be honest. Component video consists of luminance (green), red difference (red), and blue difference (blue). VGA is R, G, B, H sync, and V sync. They're two totally different signals.
 
What you are trying to do is not possible unless your graphics card specifically allows that. It is not as simple as getting the correct cable.
