Trying to establish a professional identity

I have been in the freelance game for about 2 and a half years now. I started picking up small filming and editing jobs as soon as I graduated film school. Now I have a handful of clients and a pretty diverse demo reel. This has now become my full time job. I regularly film / edit weddings with one company, I regularly upload web content for another, plus I usually have one or two side projects on top of my regular tasks. I own all of my own equipment and generally work on set by myself.

But now I'm not sure if I've been marketing myself the best way. I have a website (www.LoganReynoldsVideo.com) to show some samples of my work. But I feel like maybe I should also start a brand/ company name instead of just going with my name for all projects I make from now on. I think just using my name might not be the most professional way to go? But since I act as a one man band on set so to speak it makes more sense than to make up some name.. I'm not so experienced in this so what should I do?

What's your opinion? Should I just stick with my name (LoganReynoldsVideo.com), or start a company name (The Spot Productions?)

There's no reason why your name can't become the brand (Lucasfilm anyone?). Good work and reputation comes first.

As a freelancer, I'd say that your name more or less is your brand. And that puts a certain pressure on you.

Over something like 20 years of freelancing, first as a photographer, now as a film editor, I always say that you're only as good as your last gig.

Happy hunting!

Thanks for the help guys. I'm redesigning my website right now and I'm real excited about where it's going now.

build a brand....either your name or a business name... building a brand will take time and years....but it sounds like you are off to a great start...

What I have noticed about freelancing and running a company is that, running a company, you have people working for you and you leverage off of their talents to make money. If you are constantly finding yourself subcontracting gigs and extra work to colleagues in your area, then perhaps you are ready to take the next step. But in doing so, there is still nothing wrong with keeping your name as your company/brand name.

That makes sense. I can see myself in the future having more of a team and having other freelancers that I work with on a regular.
