Trying to create ICE

I just got AE so I am still learning. I would like to put some text over an imported jpeg file that would look like Ice Cubes. I have no idea how to even do this. Can this be done in AE? I do have Illustrator and Photoshop of which I just got too so I am still learning those as well.

Also in terms of text, is there a faster way to see an example of what each text looks like without having to select one, type something on the screen, then erase it, and repeat the process?

Re: Trying to create ICE

In terms of previewing text, I know what you mean. In photoshop you can highlight the text, highlight the font and then scroll through to see one you like. After effects wont let you do that for some reason and it pisses me off too. so generally what I do is just do my text in photoshop while after effects is open. my graffix card allows me to get an export preview on my ntsc monitor so i can see what it looks like there.

i dont know why they just dont fix that, its really handy when working with photoshop.

To preview fonts: type your text, highlight it then select the font, press option key and just scroll

Re: Trying to create ICE

so you want the background to refract through the text right? if so, you will need to mess around with some of the distort effects...like displacement.

Re: Trying to create ICE

I got another issue that I am sure is very simple to fix but since I am a AE newbie it seems hard! I have imported a picture (JPEG file) into AE. However when I add it to my compostion, its all zoomed in! It looks fine in the window up in the left top corner. I have imported that same picture in other programs and it looked ok. Not sure why AE is zooming way in on the picture. I tried adjusting the screen size and all but that just adjusts the screen and not the picture...the picture is still zoomed in. I need to have it look like a wide shot exactly how it is.
