Trying to capture flying birds

Got a problem. Trying to get my intro of my short nature film (set locally, broadcast deal set already), I want to set up my HVX 200 on a tripod so I can get a bird flying (yes, they are migrating so flying in generally the same direction), then a few more, than the whole screen filled with birds.

Yeah I know patience, etc. But my problem so far is that I can either get a narrow field of view, with a few birds, in good detail, or I can get a wider field, with less detail.

Some of my shots look just terrible, with the birds for all intents and purposes looking like swimming sperm across the screen.

Any suggestions? Can rent better camera, just harder out here in the boonies.

Wow. Thats wierd! One of the first scenes I ever composed on the 5dMk2 was of Purple Martins. I used the Nikon 35-70 f/2.8. Shot a Close up of them at their lodging and a mid shot from about 25 ft. away @ 40mm and both look like Purple Martins. I Shot at 24 fps too. So what camera and what lenses and what settings? Also, An example clip might help. [Post edit: I see HVX 200]

Having done wildlife photography for years I can tell you it is never easy.
Just need to pay your dues. Patience and practice.
Even after you get good at it your keeper percentage is still going to be low.
