Trying to build a decent starter light kit

yeah, listen to Richard. I know I feel better ordering from him just on account of how active and helpful he is here and elsewhere.

I have some questions for you as well Richard. I will be the other Canadian from DVXuser! I am curious about shipping to Canada. Costs and issues of getting across the border.

Ok, so I've found a few different lights on eBay that I might check out, here's the list so far:

1x 1k Tungsten Arri - $269
1x 650w Tungsten Arri - $209
1x 300/500w Tungsten Arri - $179

At these prices, I suspect what you were looking at were Arri clones. Typically a used Arri 650w goes for around $325 on eBay.

Don't worry, you guys aren't alone up there. We already have quite a few satisfied Canadian customers. Since we changed to Fedex, it seems to be easier for both sides of the transaction as UPS has well-known issues in dealing with coming back later to one side or the other and asking for more money.

Never seen them before. On first glance, they look like photographic lighting equipment. Interesting thing is they are balance to 3.2k and continuous output. That is a good start.

Now, if you were to plug in 2 or more into one household outlet, you will definitely pop a circuit. Also, I can't think of a time when I would use the exact same output (especially 1000 watts) for every light. It is handy that they have dimmers, but the dimmer will likely lower the color temperature considerably.

Another few negatives are fan noise from the built-in 'cooling system'. No legitimate way to add scrims, barn doors or gels.

I personally think you would be better off spending $700 on a smaller professional light kit. (by the way, if the product has to include a "professional" lable, it probably isn't)
