True Detective

I also loved it all the way through up until the very end. They did such a good job of building up a pitch black atmosphere that it seemed impossible for things to have a happy ending - then for there to actually be a happy ending, just seemed wrong.

But otherwise, I think it was just superb.

I do feel like it goes a little flat.

I liked it, but they only showed a glimpse of the true web and then seemed content to not pursue the rest.

I love that the partners end up finding what they needed to go appreciate life, and I thought they did that entire arc really well.

I felt like they couldn't wrap it up in 8 and I don't feel satisfied they truly did.

I hear there will be a season 2, but completely unrelated story and different cast.

I enjoyed it. My friends (and wife) enjoyed it. But, unlike them, I was left feeling a little underwhelmed by the ending.

I liked the idea of things not wrapping up with a pretty little bow, but b/c all they did was get the guy, without any of the links or connections really being exposed or further fleshed out at all... I felt like it was a bit of a repeat of the episode where they "got him" in '95.

I would have liked to have seen at least a bit more exploration (not necessarily resolution) of the relationship to the tuttle family, etc.

Actually, I was thinking that whole back story could make a good prequel for a 2nd season, but that's not where they are headed. But, go way back to where all that stuff started, and the occult history of the tuttle family and such... would make for some good story, I think.

They were starting to flesh out this whole history and connections to prevalent figures, etc, but in the end, I was left feeling like it was more standard, we got our serial killer, and the more compelling part got dropped... So, that is why I was a little underwhelmed (though, I do appreciate the idea of not wrapping it up in a pretty bow where everyone goes down in the end.) I just would have liked to go further into that world (even if they didn't get their justice).

But if it had ended pitch black, the story would have just been a straight line. Personally I think it's a very good thing that the characters ended up having arcs, because I was afraid the show would just end the exact same way it began, and whats the point of that? It emphasizes the importance of the crime in the lives of the detectives when the case ends up literally changing their lives.

Maybe it is because I am German and we think - raised with Grimms fairytales - if you promise a dragon you have to deliver one, sort of. I loved it until the end came. I mean, here they are, waving their top hat and telling us for seven (exceptionally good, btw) episodes about the yellow king and I feel what they will pull out of that hat will be something so..... a rabbit? Really? Okay. It's a big rabbit. Kind off. Lives in a real dirty old house. Aha. Bad rabbit. Killer rabbit. But, nonetheless: A rabbit.

That's my main issue with the show. My expectation of both the Yellow King and the guy from episode 5 were enormous, and both times it just ended up being a sadistic redneck. I wish they had taken it farther

I really agree with the author of this article. A little hint from Nick on what is coming for season 2.

For me this show is called True Detective and not True Crime because its about the Detectives stories and not the crime specifically but how it shapes Rust and Marty and that is exactly what the final episode delivered.

Its also important to remember that the show didn't build up the supernatural and yellow king stuff. They gave some bits of information that let people run with their own paranoid conspiracies based off a few scant references. Again I think this is brilliant because it made many of the audience feel the paranoia that Cole felt and looking everywhere focusing on the little things and missing things in plain site. For me I had no idea who it could be and had so many theories just like a detective would on this case. The monster at the end of the maze isn't always what your mind builds it to be and I thought that went along well with the message of the series.
