Trouble with PC modem...

I havent been able to log onto the internet from my PC since early September! I guess I am to lazy to take the tower to a repair shop! I havent updated my computer in about 2 years so one day in early September I decided to update about 20 things! After the update was complete I restarted my computer and tried to go online and nothing happened. I repeated the process several times and got the same result. I did some diagnostic checks on the modem and it kept saying the modem was working properly and nothing was wrong with it. Which brings me to my question of what could be wrong where I can't log onto the internet? I am currently using my MAC to surf the web but Id like to get my PC back up and running at least for surfing the internet since I am paying AOL a fee every month and I am not able to go online! :(

If you are paying AOL I would contact their tech support and they should be able to help you. Probably something you updated changed a file used in internet communication and they might have to either have you uninstall/reinstall something, check settings, or even send you out updated software. Good luck.

AOL tech support is a waste of time. Check your phone line- do you use your mac with that same line? make sure the line's active and ok. If not, there's your problem- which i'm sure it isnt. I would totally un-install AOL then re-install it. There are other things you can do but I'm very busy at the moment. PM me if you need any help

Actually my MAC is high speed cable. The PC is good ol Dial UP! LOL! I will test the phone line out to make sure everything is cool there and then I may have to get a newer version of AOL too...well see... thanks for the tips so far though.

What OS are you running? Back in the heyday of dial-up I used to work tech support for an ISP. 90% of the time (on Win95/98/Me boxes) a simple uninstall and reinstall of TCP/IP would do the trick. Try uninstalling and re-installing dial-up networking.

Can you set up your own connection in dial-up networking, even if it is to try and dial your home phone number? If so then I'd blame the AOL software.

if you have highspeed cable why dont you throw a network adaptor in your windows box or if it has usb try an external one, both of these are better than dial up! and then you dont have to pay AOL for the dial service, if you still want AOL without dialing i think its half price..
