trouble with DVDs

i posted this in the output/ compression section but I didn't get any replies so I will try here. I'm sorry if its not the right place.

I was reading some posts on DVD applications becuase I'm having a problem creating motion menus in Encore. I've created a few dvd's already, but everything was static. I have premiere pro, after effects 6.0, photoshop 7.0 and CS, encore 1.0, and am familar with it all. I just can't get anything with motion to work.

Bascially, in the menu, i have an image of a room with a projector and I wanted the video to be projected on that screen. So I created all the stuff in photoshop in layers and the like, then i imported the ps project into AE. Then in AE i animated the reels of the projector and the flickers light and added the video. From there i'm not sure what to do? I tried rendered the whole comp out as an .avi and an .m2v But When i try to put it together in encore it doesn't work. Is there an easy method to do this?

I just wanted a background to be playing...( the whole screen ) and then the buttons in layers over that.

Does it matter that I have the background video in .avi or .m2v? I guess I'm just asking how do I have a background video? I totally get how to make the buttons and link everytyhing and burn, it's just... how do I have a motion background?

:undecided

I don't know if this will help but, in DVD architect 2 you select the background media by right clicking the preview window.

Well I'm using Encore ( 1.0 ) Basically I should be able to replace teh static background image with a motion menu, but simply clicking on teh motion background , holding down alt and dragging it over the background. But when I do that, the menu doesn't move... just the sound plays... I dont get it

Can any one help? I mean, can you just create a .avi or a .m2v of the menu background in AE or Premiere, and then just replace the static background of the menu in Encore? Is that the right way to do it?

Well I figured it out after like 7 straight days of messing with stuff. I have to ' render motion menus' from the File menu for it to work. But When it transitions from a menu to a timeline or wahtever, there is a black break in there. Is there anyway to get rid of this? A freeze in teh video or transition is fine with me but like when i go from my main motion menu to timeline ( which has an animation ) the screen goes black for a second or two and then comes back on...

Anyone know if that's just how it's gonna have to be?

I will try there too. I figured out the main problem though. I had to click Render Motions Menus from the File menu first. But now I've created the whole menu in AE and then bring that in as a video file and replace the menu static background. Then I make all the layers invisible except for the button highlights. I think it's working, but when I try to burn the disc it just says Unknown Error, over and over. It wont let me burn a ****ing disc now.. god damnit!!! I've spend 12 hours a day for 2 ****ing weeks trying to make one dvd and I'm ready to kill!

I hear ya -- in Oct. 2004 I lost all current Encore projects. I had mastered 2 movies that were just entering distribution and needed to update the project to add trailers and ship to factory for glass mastering. Turns out that something weird about the date messed with Encore and corrupted every project I tried to open. I had no idea the date was an issue until AFTER I had opened my backup projects as well.

Grr.

I know that problem sounds weird, but I was not the only one on the Adobe forums with that issue. Changing my system clock and tinkering with the corrupt projects allowed me to rescue some thigns.

All that to say that Encore errors can be frustrating because who knows what most of them mean!

As for the black pauses between jumping from motion to static etc., I've noticed that things are usually smoother once the project is burned and played back on a DVD player. It also seems to depend on the DVD player you use. It resembles a layer change in the jerkiness when viewed in Encore.

Have you tried telling Encore to create an IMAGE instead of burning a disc? Then you could just take the image into Nero and go from there. It's easier anyway, because Encore seems to like to re-render project files every time you open it to burn the same completed project.

Man that is rotten... well I seemed to figure out all my problems. The only one now is with burning... I get the infamous " Unknown Error -1 " message. I read through the Adobe forums and found that it can be fixed with the 1.0.1 patch.

Problem again.

Can't install the damn patch. I think maybe it has to do with my version being a downlaoded version. I wasnt' doing any client or real projects with it; just for learning basically.

Well then , basically I have to either install the patch ( which i can't seem to do )

OR

Get a new version.

So I searched Ebay and found Adobe Encore 2.0 and bought that. Since I will hopefully use it to do some real deal stuff.

Hopefully this will fix my problem and it will according to the Adobe site. I really like how Encore opperates, plus I use all Adobe stuff... I even tried switching to DVD Architect 3.0, and Ulead DVD workshop. For some reason, it lowers teh quality on EVERYTHING ; it all turns out more pixelated. I thought maybe it was a pref's thing or a setting, but I couldn't find how to change it. I tried burning with Sony's software and it still looked like that on a TV screen. When I would burn with Encore, it was flawless - no quality loss.

One other thing I was experiencing was when the main menu would come up, the animation would play through and come to rest at it's final position, I would have the loop point set there, and that is where the button highlights should pop on right? Well under preview they dont seem to come on , on their own. I hvae to mouse over a few of them for them to light up. I'm wondering if this is normal?

No actually i haven't tried that. I wasn't sure how to do that?

I'm not familair with too much of image stuff, only stuff I've heard is that you can make an .iso file or something and burn that, which is an image of a disc ... right?

Hopefully Encore 2.0 will improve alot of these little problems. I have burned a couple DVDS with 1.5, and really havent had any problems.

I should have guessed that Encore was going to be problematic when the Adobe site itself says that it will be necessary to install it via safe mode in XP if you have the PXEngine problem.

Ok just an UPDATE on what all happened if anyone cares or for future reference. I Just got Encore 2.0 today, installed it.... everything works great now. Encore 1.0 ( with out update ) was definately the problem. It also new all the menus and projects that I was working on and listed them for me to open as I started up teh program.

So now I'm happy. ( for the time being, until Mr. Murphy shows up again.... grrrr )

Anyone ever get this message when building a DVD?

errormessage.jpg

I'm so ****ing sick of Adobe's bullshit messages! If it's not one problem, it's another. I was having so many issues with Ecore 1.0 so I upgraded and bought 2.0. Now I'm having another error message. The same thing with After Effects I keep losing projects, saying ' an abnormal error has occured ' or 'abnormal ' this or that. Its just getting rediculous. I'm trying to make this dvd as a demo so I can get a job and I just can't get one DVD to work.

Does anyone know what the problem is? And by the way, I only get that message on the main menu when it tries to loop. The menu background video is 1:00:00 ( one minute ) and the loop point is 00:07:00 ( seven seconds ) with loop amount set to forever. I've changed it to other stuff to see, but I still get the message.

I'm almost ready to give up on video/film forever....

Well, you could back everything up and do a fresh install of Windows. Then update all drivers and then plop Encore back on. That is a heck of a lot of work, tho.

Is your system stable otherwise?

Yeah, actually I Just did all that. I just built the computer and installed the stuff fresh and the computer has been rock solid. It could fix the problem but I dont wanna put the time and effort in to doing that.

I'm gonna try to start a new project and rebuild it and see if that works. :/

I guess.
