trouble with Beachtek adapter and t2i

Hey everyone -

I just recently purchased the Beachtek DXA-SLR adapter to go with my t2i and sennheiser me-66 shotgun mic, but I have a small problem. The sound levels I'm getting are much better than in-camera recording are, but I still hear a very noticeable hiss underneath everything. The AGC-disable function is active, all my knobs are at around 12 o'clock, phantom's off, the mic is on, I'm in stereo mode...is there something else I'm not doing right?

Any particular reason you're using the AGC disable? Magic Lantern on the t2i can disable AGC without any loss of quality.

Never really got around to installing the magic lantern. But I think I figured it out...I turned the channel 2 preamp all the way down and that seems to have done the trick.

The hiss is probably coming from the camera itself. Let's face it, it's a still camera being co-opted into doing video. How much do you think Canon invested in the audio implementation?

That AGC disable feature is more than likely going to lower the quality of your audio recording because of the way it works. Best to disable AGC in camera with ML. And that's not the only feature it offers...

It's not a replacement for a proper external recorder, but the t2i is actually known to have one of the best audio circuits out of all Canon's DSLRs. And ML lets you take advantage of that if you can't record external (like some us). With ML on the camera, in a silent room with the on board microphone, I hear almost no hiss whatsoever. If you use it properly, you can get some great results.
