Tripods on Planes

I picked up a Cartoni focus earlier this year and will be taking it on several long flights in the next few months. Anyone have any experience with gear for checking such a wonferful piece of equipment?

I've looked at the Petrol bags: http://www.petrolbags.com/products/Tripod_Bags_I/PTCR-3/PTCR-3.htm but worried about them attracting too much "attention" at luggage claim. Also been checking out Nalpak: http://www.nalpak.com/retail/prodvariants.asp?P=TP%2D0942 and Fiberbilt: http://www.casedesigncorp.com/cases_photo.asp.

I appreciate any input you might have!

Definately stick with a hard case if its going on a plane. They abuse everything when they are in a hurry loading/offloading.

I like the SKB golf cases. They leave plenty of extra room for light stands and usually have foam installed where the head would live. Wheels, handles, locks and a warranty on the stuff inside.

I have a Cartoni Focus and have taken it on a few trips. I pack the head in my luggage and check the soft bag with the legs to which I have added some ensolite padding to help protect from gorillas. I agree that a hard case would be a better option. Note the bag often shows up in the area where the golf clubs are picked up.

get a hard case and put a bath towel at the top and bottom ends of the tripod and youll be peachy

I had my Cartoni in a softbag from Bebob when traveling to Spain last week.
Additionally, I wrapped it in one layer of acoustic foam, which I planed to also use for a little extra sound blocking when doing interviews...
The head got a seperate wrapping with "bubble plastic(?)" - no problems...
Thing is, hardcases are nice but add a lot of overluggage, which can become pricey...

I was expecting a mention of Sam L Jackson in this thread...

You guys are slipping.
He actually has a custom made Kata bag. It has a rigid frame and is covered in snakeskin. :)
