Tripods: any you like that have low min. height?

I'm looking at tripods, about $400-$700 budget. I like the idea of a tripod that will get low to the ground for interesting angles, one that can also work in interview situations locked down, and one that is easy to move around. Any recommendations? Thanks as always. Yes, I've done a search but so far not much on people who bought with a low minimum height as a major purchasing factor.

You want a hithat board for something that has a low minimum height, not a tripod. Check out Overland's boards, they are supposed to be really nice.

I use a bogen 503/755MDeVe tripod setup and I absolutely love it. It's quick to set up, extremely light and portable, yet still robust enough to hand my DVX. Granted, I don't have alot of "stuff" on the dvx (mattebox, anamorphic adapter, follow focus etc etc....) but it still works great. It's only about 560 dollars too. Check it out! It can go pretty low, but there is another tripod with a short middle riser that can go even lower. I still suggest a high hat board though for really low shots.

I see some of the Gitzos get very low. I may opt for one of those and a 503 head. More money than I expected, but could be a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. May also be able to use the Gitzo for my still cameras.

I have these legs with a 501 head and love the system.

It's light, sturdy, well-built, and very affordable. Supports 15lbs (supposedly a titanium and aluminum alloy) and with legs spread out fully, it only stands about 10" of the ground (head height not included). With a short column (seperate purchase - link below) and head attached, your height is probably about 15" or so. For just over $100, you have a great set of legs and a system capable of moving from 15" to 70". These are great for still photography as well - that's what I originally purchased them for. Strength to weight ratio is spectacular. Not too heavy to carry on hikes for outdoor still photography and sturdy enough to handle medium format, heavy zooms, etc. Definitely the cheap alternative to carbon fiber.

Don't snub the brand just because they also make a line of super-cheapo tripods. This is a really good product IMO.
