Tripod recommendations?

Hello all, Me and my partner just purchased a dvx-100b and have been using a homemade cardboard "tripod" for a few weeks now because we were so anxious to film. It is time to buy a tripod. I dont really know much about tripods and am willing to learn, but what would some of you recomend in the $400-600 range?..We will most likely be using it for a Crane too in the future so it must be sturdy. What you guys think? thanks!

Use the search function and look for tripods...I know this has been discussed here a lot. Off Hand i would recommend the Bogen 503 head.

i would look for a combo, that is where you get the head and the legs together...

the one i have currently i am very happy with. it is a bogen, the model is the 525mvb with a 503 head.

the 503 designates the legs and the 503 is the head.

if you can get a combo they are almost always less than buying the legs and the head separately plus you often get a bag and not to mention that you get the hardware to mount the head to the legs.

the 503 is a nice head without being horribly expensive.

the 501 is an ok head, i use one on my hi-hat but the 503 is a lot smoother. it depends if your going to do stuff where its always locked down or if your going to be doing a lot of panning and tiliting.

if your going to be doing the moving around thing then you want at least a 503.
