Tripod Recommendations (Odd use)

Hey all,

I'm looking for some tripod recommendations for my company (acoustical consulting). To get sound measurements over 24 hours, we rig a tripod with a measurement microphone at the top, attach the meter case near the bottom of the tripod, and leave it there for 24 hours.

I'm looking for something under 5 lbs, that can handle 20 lbs of weight (for suspending the meter case off the tripod and keep in away from the ground), and with a hook or something similar near the bottom (so that bungie cords can attached and staked to the ground around it and keep it from tipping overnight).

So far I've been looking at Manfrotto carbon fiber tripods, but most of the ones I've found can't handle 20 lbs nor do they have any kind of hook I could tie into. Hoping someone here with a lot of experience in tripod shopping might be able to offer me some suggestions and/or point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

You can add a hooks or other attachments with a Manfrotto super clamp.

Why the weight restriction? Carrying 20# usually means a fairly husky tripod. With that restriction, you will probably need to go carbon fiber from the pro video arena. Plan a large budget for that.

For my day job, I've used the same sort of tripod used by event DJ's for their speakers, to hold up antennas, with similar sorts of requirements, overnight, light but temporary, etc.

Thanks, the reason for the weight is that we need to suspend the case off the tripod, otherwise very small bugs find a way to crawl inside and get into the meter when it's left on the ground. (We use a sealed Pelican case and still have no idea how they get in to begin with).

The super clamp looks like a good option.

Another route I realized we could go (if there are any products that allow this) is finding tripod feet with holes in them that we can put stakes through. Anyone know is such feet exist?

Pixelated,

I have owned that exact tripod for a laser level. It is certainly more than 5# in weight, and I personally wouldn't put 200# on one. But they are a great bang for the buck. Watch out for the spiked feet! And transit tripods like this don't have much for options to attach things at the head.
