Tripod questions

Hello all,

I've read the tripod sticky, but it didn't seem to help me much, so I will ask you all:

I've got a regular Panasonic DVX100b and I'm looking to get a tripod for it. I know next to nothing about tripods, and am not looking to spend a lot of money. Basically, I just need something that is durable and reliable and will get the job done.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch!

Anyone? I really need some help. Any suggestions - even a place where I could read up on (very) basic tripod stuff would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

If you're just going to use the dvx by itself, you should try the Libec LS-22. You can get them at B&H photo and it comes with a zoom controler, or try ebay.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but the tripod sticky is over 20 pages long, with lots of recommendations and info about tripods in all different price ranges. I'm not sure what more there is anyone can add with the information you are providing.

I understand, but I went through nearly all 20 pages of that sticky, and none of that information was particularly useful to me - it was way over my head. I'm not looking for a professional tripod that costs thousands of dollars - I'm just looking to find something cheap and reliable and appropriate.

Well, cheap and reliable don't really go hand-in-hand with tripods, but you don't have to pay thousands of dollars either. If you are just going to lock the camera down, almost anything will do. But if you want to be able to pan and tilt relatively smoothly you can go with a Bogen 503 or 501 head, and set of bogen sticks. You can get out for under 5 hundred if you shop around and buy used. If you get anything less than that you may have a hard time with smooth shots.

If you don't mind it being heavy, the Davis and Sanford Pro Vista with fm18http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ISTA7518B_Pro_Vista_Tripod_with.html#features fluid head is excellent. Read the reviews on Amazon and B&H. Plus it's only $175. For a while, B&H threw in a free dolly. Again, at 10lbs, it's heavy; however, it's extremely sturdy and it really pans and tilts smoothly.

B&H's model is B; Amazon's is sans B. I have no clue what the difference is. I bought the B model from B&H.
